ATHENS, Greece (AP) - About 2,000 pro-Communist demonstrators marched to the U.S. Embassy in Greece on Saturday, police said, protesting against the recognition of Kosovo's independence by the U.S. and a number of European states.
The demonstrators chanted slogans against the U.S., EU and NATO and burned an American flag outside the embassy, but
dispersed quietly without further incident.
On the way to the embassy, demonstrators also burned an EU flag outside the bloc's offices.
Greek opinion is overwhelmingly pro-Serb and has been throughout Yugoslavia's breakup over the past 17 years. Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis has faced criticism, including from the ranks of the ruling conservatives, for refusing to take a hardline anti-independence stance on the Kosovo issue.
