State Nicknames
Each of our 50 states has a nickname, but the way
they are applied is vastly different. THREE states derive their
nickname from animals commonly found in the state
(Michigan-Wolverine, South Dakota-Coyote, and Wisconsin-Badger), and
only ONE derives its nickname from a bird (Louisiana-Pelican). SIX
states take their nickname from minerals (Gold, Silver, etc.), but
trees, flowers and other plants lead the entire slate of nicknames
with TWELVE. Only ONE state (Iowa-Hawkeye) takes its nickname from a
person, while NINE adopted a nickname reflective of geographical
features in the state. SEVEN states are nicknamed in relationship to
a historical event. The remainder have chosen nicknames that reflect
mottos (Arkansas-Land of Opportunity), culture (Hawaii-Aloha),
or characteristics (Missouri-Show Me).
