Business and HIV/AIDS: Who Me?
February 2, 2004 - Dr. David Bloom, the Clarence James Gamble Professor of Economics and Demography at the Harvard University School of Public Health and a member of amfAR’s Board of Directors, has co-authored the first review of the global business response to HIV/AIDS titled, “Business and HIV/AIDS: Who Me?” Presented at the World Economic Forum in January, the report addresses the perceptions of HIV/AIDS in the global business community, the potential macroeconomic effect of the epidemic, the cost to businesses, and the response of the business community.

In an introduction to the report, Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, writes that it “represents the first global review, setting baseline measures, for the activities of businesses in meeting the globally shared goals of combating AIDS.” Piot continues, “we have a long way to go: the efforts of businesses, large and small, formal and informal, operating in the developing and developed worlds are still far from reaching their full potential impact on the course of the HIV epidemic.”

Dr. Bloom, who authored the report along with his wife Lakshmi Reddy Bloom and other contributors, has expertise in economic, demographic and international health issues. He has been on the faculty of Harvard University since 1996. Before that, he was on the faculty at Columbia University and Carnegie-Mellon University. Over the years Dr. Bloom has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization, United Nations Development Programme, World Bank, International Labor Organization, National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Population, and the government of China.
