Chapter 1
It was Sunday, Morning, and Dan Corgill got out of bed about 8 a.m. in the morning and decided to go to Mass. He suddenly realized that he was on the Ward at Holly Hills Psychiatric Hospital. He slipped on some sweat pants that Fr. Fitzgerald had brought with him and walked down the hall to the nurse's station. "I'd like to go to Mass this morning, please, how do I do that?" asked Dan Corgill. "You don't," replied nurse Jane, "there is no Mass on the Ward." "Why not?" asked Dan. "Because it is the opinion of Dr. Shah that Catholicism is a delusional religion. For example, you have the delusion that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. This is all very unhealthy form a psychiatric point of view." She said. "This is really crazy," Dan said, as he walked away from the nurse's station.
Dan thought about it for a minute and then decided to exercise his First Amendment rights of Free Speech, and Freedom of Religion, by singing some Catholic songs. He sang Kumbaya May Lord, and If I had a Hammer, and even sang a few Christmas Carols, just for fun. After he finished singing, Dan Corgill went back to lay down on his bed in his room. Soon, Nurse Jane came in. "Because of your obviously delusional behaviour in singing Catholic religious songs, I a giving you a strong dosage of Haldol, an anti-psychotic medication." She said. "What if I refuse to take it?" asked Dan. "Then, I will get an Orderly and we will forcibly inject you with Haldol." She replied. Dan took the oral Haldol and lay down. The nurse left.
The next day was Monday. Dan ate his breakfast and then Sally, a psychiatric aide came by to tell him that it was time for group therapy. Dan went down the hall to the lounge and sat on a couch along with the other patients. "Well, everyone, this is Sally, and this is Group. "We'll go around in a circle and everyone can introduce themselves and say a little something. Dan why don't you start." She Said.
"I am Dan Corgill, I am a law professor and I am here because they say that I have written a dangerous book. As far as I am concerned, I have been kidnapped and am being held here illegally." "Thanks for sharing that Dan, I am sure that we will be able to work with your problem as time goes on." She said. "Stan, how about you?" she asked. A thin bearded guy named Stan, replied, "I a schizo-affective, I am here because I hear voices. I hope the voices will go away." "Thank you, Stan." Said Sally. "Now, Mary, how about you?" "My name is Mary, I am psychic, I channel. But no one here or in my family believes me, they think that I am psychotic." "Yes, Mary that is true, we all know that there is no scientific basis for psychic abilities or channeling. You are obviously hallucinating and are hearing voices. Hopefully, the medication will help this." And so it went.
