He had previously suffered a kidney tumour in 2004, which was treated by surgical removal of the affected organ, but just months later in 2005 he was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukaemia.

In a statement, Beadle's agent, Nick Canham of MPC entertainment, said: "Jeremy Beadle MBE passed away peacefully today after a short battle with pneumonia. His wife Sue and close friends were at his bedside.

"In 2005, Jeremy was diagnosed with cancer, but did not let the condition affect his day-to-day life. In the autumn of 2007 he released three new books, and prior to his illness, was busy working on a series of television formats.

"Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Sue, his two daughters, Cassie and Bonnie and his stepchildren Leo and Claire. He will be greatly missed."

The Sun newspaper reports that close friends were alerted to the seriousness of Mr Beadle's condition earlier today, as his friend Russ Kane, a fundraiser for the Variety Club, paid tribute to him.

"It is with great sadness that I have just heard that Jeremy Beadle is extremely ill and unfortunately, unlikely to survive the next 24 hours", he said.

"Currently Jeremy is in a coma and the prognosis is far from good.

"I'm sure you'll join me in a silent prayer."

Beadle is most famous for the hidden-camera prank show Beadle's About, which ran from 1987 to 1996, in which unwitting members of the public were duped into increasingly ridiculous situations, and You've Been Framed, which showed viewers' amusing home videos.

At the height of its success You've Been Framed attracted over nineteen million viewers.

Born in east London, he was educated at Orpington County Boys' School before embarking on a colourful career. At times a taxi-driver and a tour guide, he also edited listings magazine Time Out both in London and the North-West.

From there he moved in to broadcasting, becoming a presenter on BBC Radios 2, 3 and 4.

His off-air antics, pranks and jokes made a name for him in the industry, and soon he was offered work in television.

In 2001 Beadle was presented with an MBE for services to charity for his work with Children With Leukaemia, and is estimated to have raised more than £100 million for various charities.

He is survived by his wife Sue, his two grown-up daughters Cassie and Bonnie, and two step-children, Leo and Clare.
