The "God and
Country" room is a special place of inspiration at the Hall of Heroes. It is
designed to reflect the courage and faith of American men and women honest enough with
themselves to understand that man alone is not enough to meet the challenges of our world,
and inspired enough to trust in Someone more powerful than themselves to help them create
dreams for the future.
Though such reliance on
God is not unique to the United States or any other nation of the world, our country's
history and success is rooted in the belief that God has had His hand on the affairs of
our country from the beginning. For all the failures many of the founding fathers
and other leaders throughout our Nation's history have had, most have realized in time of
crisis the need to pray. Their failures and faults do not necessarily reflect a lack
of faith in God, only their own humanness. It is this human nature, so often
prone to err, that creates the need within each of us to reach beyond ourselves for the
strength of God as we perceive Him.
The purpose of the
"God and Country Room" is intended in no way to evangelize or prostelyze, only
to inspire. One need not agree theologically with a great man or woman to respect
their faith and accomplishments. Towards this end you will enjoy stories here of
heroes of faith from different backgrounds, religious persuasions, denominations and
philosophies. From the pilgrims who came to our shores seeking freedom of worship to
the fiery preacher from Atlanta who dreamed of a Nation that honestly lived up to its
self-proclaimed belief in the equality of every man, our country has been shaped by men
and women of God. These are role models we dare not forget, for their own faith,
even when different from our own, can only serve to inspire us.
