Mission Statement:  "The mission of the Colorado  State Veterans Nursing Homes is to provide superior nursing care in an environment that enhances the quality of life of each resident."

A Home For Heroes

"Throughout the history of the U.S., men and women have served this country, protecting our freedom and maintaining our values.  These men and women did nothing less than save the world.

At the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home, we understand the sacrifices these men and women have made.  We provide excellent medical care, our staff goes beyond the requirements.  In addition to excellent medical care, we provide a quality of life that recognizes  their sacrifices.

The Colorado State Veterans Nursing Homes includes five veterans nursing homes located in:

  • Aurora - Fitzsimons

  • Florence - McCandless

  • Homelake

  • Rifle

  • Walsenburg

Colorado constructed the five veterans nursing homes in partnership with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which provided 65 percent of the construction costs for each home.  In return for this funding, the VA requires each state veterans home to maintain a 75 percent veteran population.  The VA allows the remaining 25 percent of each home's population to include spouses or widows of veterans.  The VA provides a per diem payment to eligible veterans residing in a state veterans nursing home.  This per diem payment partially offsets the cost of nursing home care.

Eligibility for residency:
  • Colorado resident veteran;
  • Nonresident veteran;

  • Colorado resident spouses of veterans, surviving spouses of veterans, or parents of veterans all of whose children died while serving in the armed forces of the United States. A maximum of 25% of a Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home’s residents may be in this last group.

For the Colorado State Nursing Home at Trinidad eligibility for admission is Colorado residents other individuals

 Admission criteria is based on the Nursing Home’s ability to meet the eligible prospective resident’s care needs. The need for skilled nursing care must be certified to be medically necessary by a physician licensed to practice in the State of Colorado. To maintain a safe environment for all residents, the nursing home only admits those persons whose needs can be met within the accommodations and services it provides with consideration for all residents.
