Corrections to the Roll Of Honor
It doesn't take long for any researcher on the Medal of Honor to realize that the official documents are full of contradictions, conflicting information, and historical inaccuracies. For instance:
DOUBLE RECIPIENT John Lafferty (Civil War) is shown to have been born in New York in 1842, while his citation for a second award in Peace Time under his alias John Laverty shows he was born in Ireland in 1845. At Nashville, Tennessee Corporal Kaltenbach was cited for capturing a Confederate flag believed to be that of the 44th Mississippi Infantry. Records in his home state after the war indicate it was the flag of the 5th Mississippi Infantry. While we make every effort in this website to provide accurate information and to include NEW information whenever it becomes available, we do NOT presume to correct the OFFICIAL military records unless that correction is made the the proper military authority. We do, in many cases, try to include footnotes to inaccuracies so our visitors can note them however.
In the following pages we will detail corrections based upon TWO criteria....
- Official corrections to the Medal of Honor Roll
- Notes to the official record where information is incorrect
Corrections to the Honor Roll have taken several forms, beginning with the "Purge of 1917" when a total of 911 Medals of Honor were revoked in a review of all previous awards. This correction was later corrected when, over the span of time, six of the purged Medals of Honor were restored. Over the last half-century, additional corrections...or more appropriately...omissions, have also been made with the award of BELATED Medals of Honor to individuals who had been deemed deserving but who had not been awarded the Medal of Honor.
Unless you are looking for a SPECIFIC items, we suggest you follow the links below in their order from left to right to gain an overview of these corrections.
