Brief Constitutional & Military History of Ireland

see United Kingdom for military history prior to 1922.  Ireland here is treated as a geographic entity regardless of political jurisdictions and divisions during various historical periods.

Constitutional history:  The Pale (Dublin region) was conquered by England in the 12th century, and the whole island subdued by Cromwell in 1641-1642.  Ireland was united administratively with Great Britain in 1801 to form United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.  The question of Irish Home Rule dominated British politics of the 19th century. After the civil war of 1919-1921, Ireland (less 6 counties of Ulster) achieved independence with Dominion status as the Irish Free State.  The Governor General's office and powers of the Crown were abolished in 1937.
