Catching Up With ... Cynthia Preston (ex-Faith, GH, 2002-05)

— By Tom Stacy

Cynthia Preston (ex-Faith, GH)

Soap Opera Digest: You've got so much going on, we don't know what to talk about first. Tell us about the upcoming Evening with the Stars.
Cynthia Preston: This is such a fun event. It's on October 7 in Hollywood and we've got a fantastic turnout so far. It benefits the Desi Geestman Foundation, which improves the quality of life for children suffering from cancer and their families. It's such a wonderful program that does things that other programs don't, where families really need help and can fall through the cracks. They'll provide airline tickets to fly families out for treatment, provide rental cars, groceries, phone cards. It's such a helping hand, which is why we have to support this organization.

Digest: We'll be there. What's going on with you professionally?
Preston: Busy, busy, busy! It started with getting a call from my agent, who informed me I got an episode of BONES and the leading female role in a western called LONE RIDER. Two jobs in one call? That doesn't happen very often. So, I'll be in the season premiere of BONES, which airs on Tuesday, September 25. The western I had not even read for, so it was a big surprise. Apparently, the casting agent had been a fan since a movie which I did a long time ago in Canada called Whale Music that got a lot of attention. It won several Genie Awards, which is basically the Canadian Oscars. The western stars Stacy Keach, Lou Diamond Phillips and Vincent Spano, and with me being the female lead, I got to hang out with all these great guys. And, I love, love, love horses. I love costumes, so I got the costume drama and I love horses, so it was the best of both worlds.

Bully For Her: Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) is one of the many Port Charles denizens who's glad that bad-girl Faith (Preston) got a fatal comeuppance for her years of misdeeds.

Digest: You have been busy.
Preston: You have no idea. Those jobs overlapped. I started the western, had a few days off and worked on BONES, then completed the western at 3 p.m. on August 9. I flew out of Los Angeles at 3:30 a.m. on the 10th and went to Ottawa to shoot a Lifetime movie that started on the 11th. Its working title is SISTER-IN-LAW and my co-stars were Brandy Ledford and Alex House, who's a amazing young Canadian actor.

Digest: What's new in your personal life?
Preston: My husband [Kyle Martin] is an animatronics and robotics expert. He does creature effects for movies and right now he's working on Hellboy 2. And, I was just in Toronto for a couple of days and got to see my parents, and I went to the opening party at the Toronto Film Festival. That was a fun red-carpet event.

Digest: Whew! Do you ever get the time to watch GH?
Preston: I absolutely check in. They're my fiends. I have to see what they're doing. I'll call them up and go, “Wow, great scene!”

Digest: Who do you still keep in touch with from your GH days?
Preston: I am constantly talking to Tamara Braun [ex-Carly]. I talked to Natalia [Livingston, Emily] last night. Alicia [Leigh Willis, ex-Courtney] is on my list of girlfriends. I'm in very close contact with them. I talk to Ted King [ex-Alcazar] and Ric Hearst [Ric]. They're good friends. Rick and his family treat me like an extension of their family and Ted is the salt of the earth.

"Star" Power: Preston has been instrumental to the annual Evening with the Stars event, benefitting the Desi Geestman Foundation. This year's fête takes place on October 7 at Facade in Hollywood, CA.

Digest: So, those rumors just won't die about Faith possibly having look-alike sisters Hope and Charity.
Preston: That always seems to come up [laughs]! It's good to know there's still some murmuring. I had such a good time on that show. I was so happy there. Granted, I had the most fun character anyone could ever wish for. I take my hat off to Bob [Guza, Jr., head writer] because he wrote her so well. People always ask me how I could be so scary and I say, “It's all in the writing.” I can't take the credit for that character because that was really a partnership between me and the writers.

Digest: What did you like most about playing such an evil woman?
Preston: She never stopped smiling. I remember I was in a scene with Tamara Braun on one of the very first days and I was like, “I've got to stop smiling. I'm supposed to be scary.” But one of the key things I learned in acting class was not to bury your strongest emotion. If people are embarrassed, they try to hide it. If they want to laugh, they stuff it. Whatever you're feeling that's bursting forth is raw emotion and it is the thing that the audience will click into and relate to the most. So, don't try to hide it. I was having so much fun with Faith that it was both of us smiling. She loved messing with people. She'd look in their eyes, stick the knife in and twist it, and enjoy it. I just wanted my character to have as much fun as I was having.

Digest: Would you ever consider doing another soap?
Preston: Yes. It would have to be a matter of the right timing, but I had such a fabulous experience in daytime that if it was even close to my experience with Faith, I would be thrilled.

Digest: Any final words for the fans?
Preston: Yes, come out and see us at Evening with the Stars on October 7. Your continued support for this event and the Desi Geestman Foundation is greatly appreciated. It's so close to my heart and you've been so supportive and wonderful in the past, we can only hope to build on that every year. See you there!
