Repairing Emulators

Out of Warranty Owning a vintage sampler or drum machine is a lot of fun, until it comes time to repair it ! As your kit gets older it is likely to run into more problems, and eventually you may find that support from the usual service centres and E-mu Systems has disappeared. The Emulator I and II have no formal support from
E-mu Systems, and the situation with the Emulator III/ IIIx/ Emax/ Emax II's is deteriorating fast. These early samplers are complex electronic animals that can be expensive and hard to fix.

Spare Parts E-mu Systems no longer deal with the public regarding ANY spare parts, you have to contact your local E-mu Service Centre for parts or approved Spare Part Dealers.

New Models If under warranty contact your dealer or E-mu Systems. If it's a recent model but out of warranty then contact your E-mu Systems approved Service Centre, as they will be able to service most kit from the last 10 years.

Old Models If you have an older Emulator then often a Service Centre can help to a degree, but you may need further assistance from this site. The Emulator Archive is constantly researching solutions to common problems and we have dedicated repair web pages for each of the older models - see the drop down list to the right.

For the older samplers and drum machines we have put together detailed information on how to complete various important repairs, and how to find some of the more basic spare parts.

 Repair Info

E-mu Systems is rapidly running out of spares for poducts made in the 1980's, so third party sources are often the only approach.

We recommend owners of products made in the 1980's build up a stock of key spare parts (such as LCD's and floppy drives) as many of the parts are becoming obsolete.

 3.5" Floppy Drives

Every E-mu sampler after the Emulator II uses a 3.5" floppy drive for the accessing the Operating System, and/or sample bank storage and/or OS updates. Samplers built in the 1980's are heavily reliant on the drive for sample storage and for the OS - if the drive dies the sampler dies with it ! With constant use these drives have reached the end of their natural life. Typically the motor dies, or the heads fail to read/write to the media.

Unfortunately you can not use a standard PC/Mac 3.5" floppy drive, they simply are not configured properly, and they are beige too! Its also hard to find new full height drives for the Emax, Emax II and EIII, so you will have to put up with a gap between the half height drive and the case on earlier samplers if you buy a half height drive.

The solution is to buy a new TEAC FD235HF-A529 drive. This is a black half height 3.5" floppy drive manufactured for industrial applications, and suitable for use in E-mu gear. The drive has jumpers that can be set for use in a sampler or drum machine. The drive can also be bought with a TEAC full height bezel, for use in the Emax, Emax II and EIII.
