John Wesley Hanes organized a hosiery company called Shamrock Mills. Soon after in 1902, his brother Pleasant and his sons, P. Huber and Will, established P.H. Hanes Knitting Company to make men's heavyweight underwear. The two companies merged to become Hanes Corporation in 1965. In 1979, they became part of Consolidated Foods Corporation, which was renamed Sara Lee Corporation in 1985.
