| | | General Electric Railway Company 1896 - Illinois | Beautifully engraved certificate from the General Electric Railway Company issued
in 1896. This historic document was printed by the Western Banknote Company and has an
ornate border around it with a vignette of an allegorical woman. This item is hand signed by the Company’s President and Secretary and is
over 108 years old.
Certificate Vignette
The company began in 1896 by being awarded 20 year franchises to 56 miles of projected road in the Chicago area. In return, the company agreed to pay the City of Chicago 5% - 10% of Gross revenues during years 5 - 20. The line extended from Dearborn Station, Chicago to 22nd St. In 1911, the company only had only built 2 1/2 miles of track.
