The Cinephone was first used in England and then in the United Stated in March of 1909. It was a simple and inexpensive system using a a lip-sync playback mechanism. However, there was no link between the sound and picture equipment. A playback gramophone was placed in the corner of the shot with a speed indicator clearly in view while the players mouthed to the playing record. Later, when the film was shown to an audience, an identical gramophone, also with an indicator, it was placed on the stage. The projectionist had a control dial for the gramophone and all he had to do was match the two indicators. With the aid of a quick starting double spring projector, he could have the show in sync during the leader and before the first movie image appeared. Unfortunately, Cinephone went out of business in 1911.
