formed in UK Land Command with HQ at York as a "regenerative" division/district by amalgamation of North East District (Cleveland, Durham, Humberside, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Yorkshire), and part of Eastern District (Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk)
   
  • HQ 15 (North East) Brigade, at York
  • HQ 49 (East) Brigade, at Nottingham
  • HQ Catterick Garrison
  1999.04 49 Bde transferred to 4 Div and 42 (North West) Brigade at Preston transferred from 5 Div, resulting in new boundaries: Cleveland, Durham, Humberside, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Isle of Man
  2000.04 absorbed Scotland Dist and HQ moved to South Queensferry, West Lothian
