Following is a photo tutorial for crocheting the star filet stitch. This stitch makes a nice edging.

The starting chain should be a multiple of 5, plus 1.

First, you'll need to make these two foundation rows, before continuing with the tutorial.
Foundation Rows:
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across. chain 4, turn.
Row 2: Skip first single crochet, double crochet in next single crochet, * chain 1, skip next single crochet, double crochet in next single crochet *. Repeat from * to * across row. chain 1, turn.

Row 3:

Directions Step 1: Draw yarn through first dc,

Step 2: draw yarn through chain-1 space,

Step 3: draw yarn through next double crochet,

Step 4: now draw yarn through all 4 loops on hook,

Continuing with row 3: chain 1 (to close star stitch), * draw yarn through same double crochet, through next chain-1 space and through next double crochet, then draw yarn through all 4 loops on hook, chain 1. * Repeat from * to * across the row, ending with: draw yarn through same double crochet, through chain-4 space and through third chain, then draw yarn through all 4 loops on hook. chain 4 (counts as first double crochet and chain-1 of next row), turn.

Row 4: * Double crochet in top of next star stitch, chain 1 *, repeat from * to * across row. End with double crochet in top of last star stitch. Chain 1, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for pattern.

Try this with yarn as an afghan edging, with thread as a doily edging. Several rows with thread can make a great pillowcase edging.
