Diagonal Shell Photo How To

Following is a step-by-step photo tutorial for crocheting the diagonal shell stitch.

The starting chain should be a multiple of 4, plus 1.

First, you'll need to make these two foundation rows, before continuing with the tutorial.
Foundation Rows:
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across. chain 4, turn.
Row 2: Skip 3 single crochet, single crochet in next single crochet, * chain 4, skip 3 single crochet, single crochet in next single crochet *. Repeat from * to * across row. chain 4, turn.

Row 3:

Directions Step 1:* 2 treble through next chain 4, chain 1.

Step 2: (yarn over hook, insert hook through space at right of 2nd treble from hook,

Step 3: yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over,

Step 4: draw yarn through 2 loops on hook,

Step 5: yarn over,

Step 6: draw yarn through 2 loops on hook [one double crochet completed])

Step 7: Repeat from ( to ) 3 more times *.

Repeat from * to * across row, ending with a diagonal shell worked in last ch 4 loop at edge. Chain 4, turn.

Row 4: (This is the right side of work.) Skip 3 double crochet, single crochet in next double crochet, * chain 4, skip 3 double crochet in next shell, single crochet in 4th double crochet *. Repeat from * to * across. chain 4, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for pattern.

Diagonal Shell:

Row 3: * 2 tr through next ch 4, ch 1; (yarn over hook, insert hook through space at right of 2nd tr from hook, complete a dc) 4 times *. Repeat from * to * across row, ending with a diagonal shell worked in last ch 4 loop at edge. ch 4, turn.
Row 4: (This is the right side of work.) Skip 3 dc, sc in next dc, * ch 4, skip 3 dc in next shell, sc in 4th dc *. Repeat from * to * across. ch 4, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for pattern.
