Single Crochet Longstitch,

The following photos show the effect of the long sc worked in the stitch of 4 rows below, 3 rows below, 2 rows below:
As you can see, novelty yarns give extra interest to the stitch. It's fun to experiment with different types of yarn for this stitch and also to try different combinations of the length of the stitch.
Your experiment:
How about making a square, any size; six or seven inches square could be good:
First: Make a number of foundation rows of plain single crochet. The photos on this page show four foundation rows.
Next: With a contrasting color, work a row of long single crochet, working out your own pattern from varying the combination of lengths of the stitches.
Repeat this: Switch back to your first color or add a new contrasting color for another set of foundation rows. When you have completed your foundation rows, repeat the long sc row. Continue in this manner to desired length.
Give it a try and see what you come up with.
