Photo How-Tos: Crocheting With Color Changes Within A Row

Basics, Crocheting Over Unused Color

In Single Crochet: To change to a different color within a row or round, on the stitch just before the stitch that will be made in the new color, pull up the first loop for a single crochet in the old color, then, pull the new color through the last two loops to complete that single crochet.

In Double Crochet: If you are changing colors in double crochet, work the beginning of the double crochet, as usual, in the old color until you have completed all but pulling the last loop through the two loops on the hook. Drop the old color, pull a loop of the new color through the last two loops on the hook to complete the last part of the double crochet in the new color. Changing Colors In DC, Step-By-Step

The photos below show various details for changing colors.

This photo shows the first step in changing from navy color yarn to white yarn. This is the last stitch with navy and the next stitch will be white, so we need to pull the white through the last loop of the navy single crochet stitch. The two navy loops on the hook are the beginning of making this single crochet. This photo shows the white yarn wrapped around the hook, getting ready to do the last loop of the single crochet stitch in white.

This photo shows the white yarn having been pulled through the two navy loops on the hook to complete the single crochet stitch, (with a color change) ready for the next stitch to be in the color white.

Crocheting over an unused yarn color: Here you can see the navy yarn placed along the top of the row, in preparation to crochet over it on the next stitch.

This photo shows the next single crochet stitch completed in the color white (the navy unused strand was crocheted over when doing this white single crochet stitch).
