The Butterfly Stitch

A Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial

The size of the "butterfly" can be varied by using more (or less) chains. This example uses a chain 10. Use any kind of stitch that you want to for the stitches that surround the butterfly portion of your pattern. This example simply uses double crochet stitches on either side of the butterfly stitch.

The butterfly stitch is worked over 4 rows. In this how-to I am giving you instructions for only the 10 stitches over which the butterfly stitch is worked. What you do in your design with the stitches on both sides of the butterfly stitch is up to you. (Experiment a little. Unleash your creativity.)

Instructions

Row 1: chain 10.
Row 2: chain 10.
Row 3: chain 10.

Following are the step-by-step instructions for row 4:

Chain 5.

Draw up a loop around the three chains of the three previous rows.

(As shown here, it's best to keep the loop a bit long for a nicer effect.)

Complete as a single crochet.

Chain 5.

That's it. Now continue with whatever pattern you are doing for the rest of the row.
