Musharraf to leave army post
Tue, 27 Nov 2007 19:40:55
The Pakistani military has begun preparations for a ceremony at which General Pervez Musharraf will formally step down as army chief.

The ceremony at the army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi is expected to be held 'within the next 48 hours' ahead of Musharraf's oath-taking.

Attorney General Malik Qayyum has said Musharraf will relinquish his army uniform and take oath for a second presidential term on Thursday.

The general is expected to hand over his post to his hand-picked deputy Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani, a former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI), on November 28.

Musharraf will chair a meeting of the corps' commanders before stepping down, the Dawn reported.

The military, however, will remain responsible for the president's security and an elite Special Service Group unit headed by a brigadier will guard Musharraf.
