Olmert sets new condition for talks
Thu, 15 Nov 2007 04:59:41
Olmert's new condition could complicate the Annapolis talks.
Israel's prime minister says for talks with Palestinians, Israel should be recognized as "the state of the Jewish people."

Palestinian leaders have promptly rejected Olmert's demand, Reuters reported.

The new condition set by Israel threatens to complicate attempts to draft a joint document to serve as a foundation for a US-hosted conference on Middle East later this month.

Ehud Olmert has voiced his new condition to the EU's top diplomat Javier Solana during his visit to Bait-ul-Moqaddas on Wednesday.

Asked about Olmert's comments to Solana, the Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat accused the Israeli leader of asking Palestinians to meet conditions that were not set out in a 2003 "road map" charting reciprocal steps towards creating a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel.

The Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has also said that "we do not accept conditions of this type, not at all."
