Musharraf refuses to end emergency
Thu, 15 Nov 2007 01:04:05
Pakistan's President Gen. Pervez Musharraf
Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf refuses to end the country's state of emergency despite the Washington's call for an immediate action.

General Musharraf said for the first time that he expects to step down as chief of army by the end of November.

In an interview with AP, Musharraf said that the country's current crisis made him to stay in power and control the embattled nation, adding that he would cooperate with Bhutto if she wins parliamentary elections.

After declaring an emergency and suspending the constitution on November 3, the United States and other Western allies of the Pakistan's leader put him to a corner and pushed him to end the emergency.

Musharraf's presidential mandate and the term of his Parliament will expire on Thursday and he had planned to resign as army chief on this day. But he announced he had to postpone the issue until a court decides on his recent re-election.

He said the exact time would depend on the reconstituted Supreme Court but expected it to happen within this month.
