Sat, 03 Nov 2007 06:51:52
The US has expressed dismay with Russia and China for their opposition to new sanctions on Iran over its l nuclear program.

Senior diplomats of the five veto-wielding UN Security Council member countries and Germany, the P5+1, discussed the issue Friday in London.

The US is expressing frustration over the London meeting, in which they say neither China nor Russia appeared to be agreed on a sanctions resolution.

The US is trying to peresuade the Security council to approve a third sanctions measure this month.

At a news briefing, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said the P5+1 did not reach agreement on terms or a timetable for sanctions, and that the US delegate, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicolas Burns, was disappointed with China and Russia for their opposition to sanctions.

Russia and China have repeatedly expressed thier opposition to any sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, saying that civilian nuclear technology is the legitimate rights of the Iranians.

The British Foreign Office, which spoke for the six powers, also said they reiterated their shared commitment to resolve the issue through diplomatic means, and urged Iran to cooperate.
