Nasrallah backs Aoun-Hariri meet

Hezbollah Secretary General, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah
Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah has welcomed dialogue between the Lebanese opposition and the March 14th alliance.

Nasrallah hailed any talks between the two sides and said he is still hopeful that an agreement will be reached despite certain intentions to ignite division among the Lebanese.

"We support and push for any effort, any meeting and dialogue that would lead to agreement among the Lebanese factions. We pray that we reach the desired goal because we are keen on the country's welfare. We know that the interests of the Americans and the Israelis lie in spreading division."

He also lashed out at the ruling coalition for their silence over the Israeli maneuvers on the border with Lebanon and for the violation of the country's airspace.

His speech came on the same day as the head of the parliamentary majority Saad Hariri and the head of the Free Patriotic Movement Michel Aoun met in Paris to find a solution to the long-standing political crisis.

The two sides said in a joint statement that they would act responsibly and agreed that the elections should be held according to the constitution and without any foreign interference.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared on Friday that the Bush Administration opposes any consensus between the ruling coalition and the opposition, and that the most favored option for the US is to support a president that serves its interests in Lebanon.
