Poll: Lebanese favor direct election
Sun, 07 Oct 2007 12:23:06
The latest polls indicate that up to 77 percent of Lebanese support the idea of electing a president through a general referendum.

A recent poll conducted by the Beirut Center for Research and Information revealed that 77 percent of Lebanese support the idea of directly electing a president, according to Sunday's reports.

The Center gathered information from 800 Lebanese citizens belonging to various groups and of different religious backgrounds.

Around 74 percent of the participants said they would back a transitional government if no agreement were to be reached over a presidential candidate.

Up to 48 percent of those who took part in the poll said they would like the head of the Free Patriotic Movement Party, Michel Aoun to be elected as the next president, while 44 percent opted for Army Commander General Michel Suleiman.

Emil Lahoud, who was elected President of Lebanon in 1998, nears the end of his already extended term, as Lebanon waits for its politicians to reach an agreement about the person who is to replace him.
