FIFA bans high-altitude matches
Sat, 15 Dec 2007 20:32:57
FIFA has agreed to ban all matches staged at stadiums over 2,750 meters above sea level unless players are allowed to acclimatize.

FIFA President Joseph Blatter said the ruling would apply with immediate effect, but added that FIFA was still working out the details of how much time would be required for players to acclimatize.

The FIFA Executive Committee came to the decision during a Tokyo meeting on the sidelines of the Club World Cup.

FIFA will also spend $40 million on a new referee development program to professionalize the environment in which referees develop and work.

The Executive Committee further said that it would 'closely monitor' the developments in the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) regarding the IFF elections, which have so far been canceled twice after FIFA opposed the candidacy of members of Iran's Physical Education Organization (PEO).

Meanwhile, PEO head Mohammad Aliabadi, who is on a visit to Pyongyang, said on Saturday that he would decide whether or not to withdraw from the IFF presidential elections after returning to Tehran.
