Chinese herbs help relieve cramps
Wed, 31 Oct 2007 20:15:09
A study suggests Chinese herbs are more effective in relieving menstrual cramps compared with drugs, acupuncture or heat compression.

Researchers at the University of Western Sydney believe herbs are more effective not only in relieving pain, but also in reducing the recurrence of the condition over three months.

The findings revealed a higher incidence of pain relief in women using Chinese herbs. The results were showed to be promising in the different countries (China, Taiwan, Japan and the Netherlands) in which the study was conducted.

Herbal drugs are reported to help individuals regulate their energy (Qi) and blood, warm their bodies and boost the kidney and liver functions.

Some of the effective herbs include Chinese angelica root (danggui), Szechuan lovage root (chuanxiong), red peony root (chishao), white peony root (baishao), Chinese motherwort (yimucao), fennel fruit (huixiang), nut-grass rhizome (xiangfu), liquorice root (gancao) and cinnamon bark (rougui).

More than 50% of women in the reproductive age and between 60 to 85% of all teenaged girls suffer from menstrual cramps, making it the leading cause of absence from school and work.

The reason for these pains is not clear; however, they are believed to be linked to ovarian hormone imbalance.
