We distinguish between "children on the street" and "children of the street" - the transition is floating. Children on the streets work under exploitative conditions but they still have regular contact with their parents. The children of the street work under exploitative conditions and have no contact with their parents - in both cases we speak of street children.

Worldwide there are, according to the statistics of UN organisations, approximately 80 to 100 million children who are fighting in the streets of the cities for their survival. Also in Europe the number of children and juveniles who live in the streets is rising dramatically.

In Germany there are about 7.000. This shows that street children is not a problem of the third world.
