Lets begin with my favorite of all films. Dario Argento`s Suspiria (3 Disc Limited Edition) is the most beautiful film of any genre, and until I saw this I was only slightly interested in horror. It opened my eyes by cleansing the scales that covered them. It cleansed with its pinks and greens and of course blood reds. If you haven`t seen this. . .
And in order to keep this list making sense, i will now follow order with more of director Dario Argento's films. I bought almost all of them after seeing Susperia, and though none of them are quite as lovely as susperia, they are all cool and attractive in a subtle Argento way. Inferno/Phenomena - after susperia this is what to get- Inferno is my second favorite Argento film and it continues with the beauty of Susperia though it jumps around in the story. Phenomena is also interesting though it may be a little corny. Sleepless is just plane creepy, and it is stylish too. Sort of a mixture of all Argento`s films. Opera : Limited Numbered Edition (3000) rocked. The actress was hot and though the gore was a little more than i actually was able to enjoy, this was a good one. The Stendhal Syndrome on the other hand went way over on the gore and lacked anything to lighten the mood. Still it had some really cool moments, was scary at times, and asia argento is nice to watch. Now for what i thought were not quite as great from Argento. Tenebre/Deep Red were giallos that were a little lacking of the supernatural beauty i loved from Susperia and Inferno. Still they coast on Argento`s style and gore. They also were low on the actual horror scale. but OK on the watchable scale, maybe just old. Deep Red was better than Tenebre. But if you want to understand Argento, you need to at least see these. Once you start watching Argento films, it will be hard to match the feeling you have when you put a new Argento DVD in the player and get ready to begin another journey to wherever it is that he takes you.
After Argento people need to mention the other two big name Italian Horror directors; Lucio Fulci and Mario Bava. Lucio fulci is an extreme director and that makes his films really awesome and enjoyable. The gore in his films usually is over the top and sick but i have really enjoyed the films I have seen by him. Zombie seems to be his most popular and it was good, but my personal favorite was The Beyond. This film had good atmosphere and a high amount of suspense. Mario Bava is an earlier director than Argento and it shows, but he invented the giallo film and his style is smooth. I guess you could say Blood and Black Lace was the one that started it all.
and now for another very unique director. Takashi miike, unlike argento he is not always categorized in the horror genre, but this one film Audition is a classic in the horror genre already and it just came out a few years ago. Let me just say, at first I was not overly impressed because it had been super hyped up, but it stuck with me. I find myself drifting back to certain scenes. If you are curious about other miike films, here is one to check out, but you probably wont enjoy it -Visitor Q is just disturbed. His action films are really really violent, but interesting to check out too.
Staying in Japan, lets jump to one people say is the scariest of all times. Ringu is a well done film, but i was not scared. hmmm. i don`t know, but I cant recommend it. I probably need to watch it again. Freeze Me is pretty gory and features a very beautiful japanese model(Harumi Inoue). it is not audition though and didnt stick me like audition did, but it may freeze you.
The american version of Ringu The Ring (Widescreen Edition) was really cool too.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - a very impressive horror film. it was really cool, and it was scary. You really feel like you are part of the group of teens stranded with that chainsaw wielding family. A complete classic.
The Shining is another favorite of mine and another horror classic. Arguably, horror writer Stephen King's best, and Kubrick is arguably the greatest director ever. This one will keep you glued to the screen watching halls fill with blood.
Re-Animator (The Millennium Edition) is a cool movie that wasnt at all scary, but will have you laughing with its fake gore and headless zombies. This is recomended only if you feel like some light fun. but it was far from my favorite either.
House on Haunted Hill - so i liked this one. this modern horror remake set in a locked down mental institute is a very crazy movie with some cool disturbing images. good for a quicky.
From Hell (Two-Disc Special Edition) is a horror flick that stars one of my favorite actors. I guess it surprised many people with how good it was. I liked its feel, though depp has been better. another lesser depp horror is The Ninth Gate. This one wasnt scary at all, stay away unless you are desperate. depp and the cool old books are the only redeeming factors. Sleepy Hollow was a movie with unlimited potential. we are talking johnny depp and tim burton together for an R rated horror flick. but it did not quite make it for me. it was average.
Did you know depp was in A Nightmare on Elm Street? but I cant recommend it. It was sort of stupid. There is also THE list of new teen horror flicks that just seem to grow and grow. I will spare you, since most of them really suck (especially the sequels) and most of them are less scary than the children aimed The Nightmare Before Christmas (Special Edition). I actually love this movie just because of the Tim Burton feel. maybe this can be classified as horror because it is full of gory monsters and its title includes the word "nightmare." dont know but I will jump at any chance to recommend it.
