Did you ever feel you were trapped in 2D world. That's what it's like when you deal with the growing legions of the young but stupid. It crystalizes in the moment when you refer to some cultural icon but get a blank deer-in-the-headlight look for your audience. In order to help the less that educated out of the culture sewer of $.50 and Madonna (who could be had for less), I dedicate the following films.
The first and foremost, is the best set of lines ever proposed by any director. It's that film that is so trendy to hate, but is certainly the biggest grossing film of all times (considering all the derivates). namely Star Wars Star Wars - Episode IV, A New Hope (Special Edition). I know the LucasArts folks have renamed it to episode IV, but it's still the Big Daddy. Who could not love a movie with Alec Guiness. I will always remember the "hive of scum and villany" and Carry Fisher saying "your foul stench". It has become amusing to talk about the film with peers who high handily claim that they have never seen the film <where were they in 1977? the Artic???> . Soon to change world finances as it hit the DVD.
#2: Really, can you be a technologist without memorizing Douglas Adam's book...Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. After all, you wouldn't know any of the major tech icons.. Zaphod, Trillian, Arthur Dent, Ford, and the answer to all questions... "42". The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy It's seen only in tape... and bits and pieces are in every chip in the world.
#3: Let me make you an offer you can't refuse...the Godfather The Godfather (Widescreen Edition) It's the only really great one of the saga. I know that many like the saga... but the last film is drekk and number II is only good not great... In this film, you get all the stuff from the horse's head to Michael kissing his friends good-bye. And it's the only film that proves Annie Hall (aka Diane Keaton) can act. It happen and Coppola got it on tape...
#4. It's immaturity and the line "It's Evil, don't touch it." in me that loves the next film. Time Bandits made by Terry Gillam (Python fame...) It has darwves, giants, trolls, god, the devil, napoleon, robin hood, Sean Connery (Agamemnon). Women hate it, Men(aka boys) love it.. It's fantasticlly wonderful, I like it better than Brazil, better than the Holy Grail. Time Bandits (Special Edition)
#5. Another film with an endearing line and the non-pc version of the most sexy smoking ever done "To Have and To Have Not" shows Bogart and Bacall. The line in question... "Just Whistle, you know how to whistle?" By an absolutely sumptous Bacall... To Have and Have Not (Snap case) Wow, what a Babe...from Babe-alon...
#6. For the studious minded.. which want to see what universities are all about.. Dean Wormer really exists in clones thoughout America... See Animal House. It's crude, disgusting, base, and very very funny. National Lampoon's Animal House (Widescreen Double Secret Probation Edition) This thing is chock full of zesty one liners.. "Don't Get Mad, Get Even."...
#7. For more humour which is funny.. See John Landis other Belushi film... "Blues Brothers"... "We're on a mission from God." or "It's the Band". It was very sad when he died. I felt like a friend had passed. The Blues Brothers (Collector's Edition)
#8. "There's no place like home." and the theme of all displaced persons.. "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore"... The Wizard of Oz It's really good, sweet, and nice....
I missed other zingers... but heck...an education can't come all at once...
