Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer

Product Description
Surf’s Up is an animated feature that goes behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive penguin surfing. The film profiles Cody Maverick, an up-and-coming surfer as he enters his first pro competition. Inspired by his hero, a legendary wave rider named Big Z, Cody leaves his family and his town of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he desires. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with a washed up old surfer named The Geek, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isn’t always the one who comes in first

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL ANIMATION AND FRESH APPROACH MAKE 'SURF'S UP' ! " AWESOME DUDES!", November 4, 2007
'Surf's Up' is one of the best animated films I have ever seen or at least in the CGI era of animation. The Mockumentary style and incredible animation keep the story fresh, funny and amazing to look at! Even if your not a fan of animated films, this one may change your mind. The film also has a hip and appropriate soundtrack. The DVD transfer is excellent and this is a must see movie!.....Cowabunga!

5.0 out of 5 stars OH NO another penguin movie...Thank Goodness, August 7, 2007
If you still have a bad taste in your mouth from Happy Feet, which to me was somewhat creepy and not very entertaining, then take a swig of the minty freshness of Surf's Up. This is not so much a penguin movie than a knarly surfing gig. Animated in documentary style, the directors keep the basic, feel good about yourself story line, fresh with graphics that are extremely eye popping. Real life emotions are plainly shown and understood in the facial expressions and body language of each character.

Cody wants to 'get away' and takes his chance in a surfing contest at a beautfiul rendered island scene that gets more WOWs from me then such films that go for reality. Polar Express comes to mind. This movie hits every mark that I can think of. Children and adults will enjoy this. I am 41 and when Cody is making his board with the father figure Geek, I turn back into child working with my father's help building ANYTHING. You will see. Shia Labeouf the voice of Cody is an exceptional find. As Steven Speilberg seems to understand since he will be in 2 of his movies that are coming out. And Jeff Bridges as Geek...Well what can you say. GREAT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony Beating Pixar And Dreamworks In Originality?, October 29, 2007
By B. Merritt "FWOMP Book Review and filmreviews... (WWW.FILMREVIEWSTEW.COM, Pacific Grove, California United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Sony Pictures is keeping pace with the other giants of the animation industry: Pixar (recently released Ratatouille) and Dreamworks (new release THE BEE MOVIE starring Jerry Seinfeld's voice). In fact, I'd dare say that SURF'S UP may top these other two simply by the nature of its filming technique.

Whereas animation has made technical leaps and bounds over the past two decades, it has not, however, done much to improve the rather bland storytelling that comes with it (`desperate hero struggles, fails, gets back up, tries again, succeeds, marries the hot chick, end of story'). And although Surf's Up slips into this cliche, it does it in a most unique fashion that helps one forget that we're seeing the same old story again.

This time we get an animated mockumentary (who ever thought of this should get a serious pat on the back!) Handheld camera movements. Star interviews. Kids' commentary. It's all there. The story is that of Cody (Shia LaBeouf, Transformers), a surfboard loving penguin stuck in Antarctica ...until he's selected to compete in a world championship against surfing giant Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Balls of Fury). Cody fell in love with surfing after his little frozen home was visited years before by then surfing phenom Big Z (Jeff Bridges, Tideland). Unfortunately Big Z died catching a huge wave and was lost forever. Or was he?

Once at the competition, Cody realizes he's way out of his league. Tank is bigger, stronger, more talented, and perhaps too infatuated with his trophies? With buddy Chicken Joe (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite) at his side, Cody and he soon run into the beautiful Lani (Zooey Deschanel, Failure to Launch), a penguin lifeguard that immediately infatuates Cody. After saving Cody's life, Lani introduces him to her uncle Geek. It doesn't take long for Cody to realize that Geek is Big Z, hiding away in the tropical forest of the island and securely away from the water/beach. Hero-worship turns to anger turns to friendship as Big Z helps Cody as much as Cody helps Big Z.

The story is similar to all animated ones, but the documentary-style filming gives Surf's Up a bump up on the success scale. It's funny and not entirely for young kids. There are peeing jokes, poop jokes (including the word "crap"), and some violent scenes that might turn off some parents. Still, it's original enough to get a big thumbs up and funny enough for adults and teens.

(For another fantastic animated feature I highly recommend Hoodwinked, an independent film that is sure to please kids and adults alike, too.)
