This is my definitive list of the 40 most sexually arousing mainstream films on DVD. A great deal of subjectivity was necessarily involved in its’ creation, but in determining which film candidates to consider, some guidelines were devised, and for what it’s worth, they are spelled out below:
1. Evaluation of enticement values was of entire films and not individual film scenes. Thus, as a practical matter, no film with only one sex/nude scene made my list. (See footnote #1)
2. Low budget exploitation films were not considered. (See footnote #2)
3. All films had to be available on DVD and in English (not subtitled or poorly dubbed). (See footnote #3)
4. Films were rated by ‘overall arousal rating’ - the extent to which, in its’ totality, I found the film experience sexually stimulating. (See footnote #4)
5. Films without any nudity or near-nudity were not considered
The 40 Most Sexually Arousing
1. 9 songs - Unrated Full Uncut Version
A film comprised solely of a series of one couple’s sex activities over several months intended to convey their emotions and relationship status. The sex is interspersed with brief shots of 9 live rock concert songs, but is otherwise constant, adventurous, unsimulated & at times pornographic. Mainstream film doesn't get more explicit than this, and the sex/bondage play is very realistic. Overall Arousal Rating A
2. Lie With Me
A film about a sexually obsessed and aggressive woman who communicates with men solely through sex. She masturbates, has sex outside, and in general demonstrates uninhibited sexual faculties in several provocative sex scenes, some hardcore. Eventually she falls in love. Very stimulating. 3. The Center of the World
A stripper, who we initially see performing with a lollypop at her club, is paid by a wealthy patron to perform privately each day in his hotel room. What follows is a series of very steamy, strip/seduction scenes that get hotter and more significant as she becomes emotionally involved. Very realistic, especially if you’re curious about what a stripper has to offer, and very hot! Overall Arousal Rating A
4. Gia (Unrated Edition)
The sexiest woman alive, Anjolina Jolie, puts forth a remarkable performance as a hard-partying supermodel who self-destructs. Angolina spends much of this version naked, taunting, & having lesbian sex. Her sexual attitude is too hot for words, and her nude fashion shoot behind a chain link fence will rouse the dead. Overall Arousal Rating A
5. 9 1/2 Weeks
Kim Basinger plays a sexual submissive to Mickey Rourke in several very kinky sex scenes, including one in which she nakedly arches her back and spreads her legs in the rain in a dank & dreary alley stairwell, and others involving the use of food and ice. Whew! Overall Arousal Rating A
6. Poison Ivy - The New Seduction
Three separate seduction scenes in which Jaime Pressly disrobes or swims topless to get attention, make this movie highly enticing. The sexual tension runs high as she brazenly displays her athletic body to tease and provoke her reluctant male prey – especially in the cabana scene where she pours champagne over her breasts. 7. Zandalee
A free-spirited & bored New Orleans housewife cannot resist the sexual advances of an artist (Nicholas Cage) visiting her husband. Cage, as a sleazy & menacing low-life, is the perfect sexual reprobate, but the film is all about Erika Anderson as the sex-starved & willing paramour. Naked and ravished in lengthy sex scenes in all sorts of places – she is hauntingly beautiful & sexy. (Note: Cheaper DVD versions are available) Overall Arousal Rating A
8. Showgirls
Not as hot as it would be had the lead character (Elizabeth Berkeley) enjoyed her work, but there is more nudity in this film than in any other mainstream movie, the women are absolutely gorgeous, and the world it creates of oversexed erotic club strippers servicing their patrons, is very stimulating. 9. The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version)
A film about sexual discovery, it features a buxom Eva Green and two male cohorts frequently nude and often engaged in various sex games. Very high skin appeal; Eva’s uninhibited performance and bust-to-waist measurement ratio is very erotic. If you like coming-of-age sensuality, you’ll like this film. Overall Arousal Rating A
10. Dancing at the Blue Iguana
A personal & slightly melodramatic look at the lives of 5 dancers in a world of sex, drugs, & naked gyrating strippers performing sizzling routines. Good footage of Daryl Hannah and Jennifer Tilly in what is an absolute voyeur’s delight. Overall Arousal Rating A
11. Sherrybaby
Maggie Gyllenhaal plays an edgy, ex-con/drug addict/stripper trying to reform. Miniskirted and cleavage baring, Gyllenhaal’s ample bosom and lustful pursuit of sex as a release from her frustrations is realistic and very stimulating. Her sex scene in the motel room, albeit brief, is one of the three or four all-time hottest sex scenes in mainstream film. Overall Arousal Rating A
12. The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Much of the movie is about sex, but Lena Olin as the mistress is something special. She spends much of the time unclothed, & her lesbian nude photo session & sex in the mirror scene are smoking. Oh, and her body… Overall Arousal Rating A-
13. Wild Orchid
A steamy Zalman King drama about sexual discovery in which an innocent woman (Carrie Otis) sent to Rio is seduced by its’ exotic culture & the erotic & kinky sex antics of businessman, Mickey Rourke. Thin plot, but the film centers on sex games, Otis is beautiful & engages in several voyeuristic displays, Rourke is the best there is at creating a realistically perverse sexual atmosphere, and the sex is really hot! (allegedly real, as the stars were then dating) Overall Arousal Rating A-
14. Original Sin (Unrated Version)
Antonio Banderas advertises for a mail-order bride and gets Anjolina Jolie! The director’s cut has lots of nudity and explicit sex, and with Anjolina playing a whorish femme fatale/con-artist in a humid tropical setting, you can literally feel the heat. Overall Arousal Rating A-
15. This Girl's Life (Unrated Version)
A drama about the personal stresses that face adult actresses, the film unfolds in documentary fashion as a newcomer, Juliet Marquis, introduces us to a sort of day-in-her-life as an internet pornstar at the camera-laden home where she lives and works. Ms. Marquis and her coworkers are stunning, exotic, and very sexually convincing. There are 7-8 sex/nude scenes, and the story the film tells is a good one. Overall Arousal Rating A-
16. Embrace of the Vampire
Alyssa Milano stars in this softcore vampire movie, which she used to demonstrate her readiness for adult roles. It features her delectable chest, prominent and topless in several sequences, and a seduction scene, orgy scene, and dream foursome that give it high sensual appeal. Overall Arousal Rating A-
17. Body of Evidence (Unrated)
An erotic thriller, rather poorly directed, Madonna still plays the kinkiest femme fatale in mainstream film. Intrigued by S&M, belts, handcuffs, masturbation, broken glass & videotaped sex, she is incredibly audacious, and her sex scenes smolder. Overall Arousal Rating A-
18. Lake Consequence
In a reprise to Two Moon Junction (See #20 below), Zalman King presents a sexually repressed housewife (Joan Severance) who falls for a landscape worker (Billy Zane). Joan’s segue from sexual propriety to animal lust is not as smooth or believable as Sherilyn Fenn’s in Two Moon, but Joan’s sex scenes are more intense, and longer. The sex-in-the-field scene is scorching hot. Overall Arousal Rating A-
19. Color of Night
Jane March shows off her magnificent body in several fully nude scenes, including a steamy sex scene with Bruce Willis by the pool that is one of the hottest sex scenes of all times. Jane’s voyeur appeal is off the chart - a childlike nymphomaniac whose innocent and vulnerable looks lend an increased eroticism to her sex scenes. Overall Arousal Rating A-
20. Two Moon Junction
Another Zalman King drama with Sherilyn Fenn as a wealthy and engaged southern belle who cannot resist the animal magnetism and sexual challenges of a crude carnival worker, and enters into a torrid sexual affair with him. Fenn is stunning in at least three fully nude scenes, and the sexual encounters get more intense as the obviously doomed affair continues. Probably King’s best film overall. Overall Arousal Rating A-
21. Cat People
A dark cult classic with Nastassja Kinski as an unbeknowing virginal member of a race of Cat People who transmute into ferocious black cats when sexually aroused. Kinski is mysterious, unbelievably catlike and completely naked in a series of nocturnal quests for prey through New Orleans that comprise much of the film. A memorable and unique erotic horror/thriller – with an emotional bondage scene. Overall Arousal Rating A-
22. Swimming Pool (Unrated Version)
An elderly writer (Charlotte Rampling) shares a retreat with a liberated young woman (Ludivine Sagnier) who likes to sunbathe topless and seduce the town boys. Ms. Sagnier has a truly monumental body that defines “voluptuous”, and the film is especially enticing because the writer is a voyeur who can’t take her eyes off of her. Overall Arousal Rating A-
23. The Story of O
A young woman surrenders herself to a world of total sexual submission where she must be sexually available at all times and is trained in Bondage & Discipline and Sadomasochism. A landmark film and cult classic for all B & D adherents. What more need be said. Overall Arousal Rating A-
24. Basic Instinct - Director's Cut (Ultimate Edition)
Sharon Stone is perfect as an insatiable sexual predator in this classic erotic thriller. Her sex scenes are as provocative as she is beautiful, and her leg-crossing, crotch-exposing, interrogation scene is legendary. Overall Arousal Rating A-/B+
25. The Lover
An innocent schoolgirl (Jane March at age 18) offers herself to an older Chinese man & discovers her sexuality. The sex/love scenes are realistic, explicit, meaningful & frequent. Overall Arousal Rating A-/B+
26. Intimacy (Unrated, Widescreen Edition)
A film about a man and woman who seek comfort through weekly sex trysts. The sex scenes are as graphic as any in mainstream cinema, including one with uncensored fellatio, but the sex is deliberately made to feel impersonal and unsatisfying, which affects its’ arousal value. Overall Arousal Rating B+
27. Boogie Nights (New Line Platinum Series)
A drama about a young stud’s (Mark Wahlberg) experience in the porn movie industry, it does a good job of conveying the feel and tenor of the adult movie business. As expected, it includes a fair amount of realistic sex and nudity, but in the context of staging sex scenes for business purposes, it is not overly arousing. Still, the sex scenes with Heather Graham, and Juliannne Moore on the desk, will get your engine running. Overall Arousal Rating B+
28. Kari Wuhrer Luscious aka Vivid Dvd All Region Ntsc Unrated Uncut
A model convinces her artist boyfriend to use her body as a canvass, literally, to renew their sexual energy. A half-dozen scenes of nude modeling, body painting and technicolor sex, without a real plot, put this film closer to softporn than mainstream film, but it does star Kari Wuhrer, and it is very hot. Overall Arousal Rating B+
29. Blown Away
Every female child star has her “coming out” film role to demonstrate that she, too, can play the sexual temptress – and this is Nicole Eggert’s. An erotic thriller with Nicole as a femme fatale, she’s semi-nude in several sequences including two sex scenes, one scorcher up against a wall. She is positively stunning - effective too. If her protagonist hadn’t been Corey Haim, this probably would have been a big hit. Overall Arousal Rating B+
30. Breathless
Several memorable nude scenes here of Valerie Kaprisky, whose sex jaunts with Richard Gere almost make the movie worthwhile. Overall Arousal Rating B+
31. Striptease
A single mom (Demi Moore) becomes a nightclub stripper to earn money for a custody fight, and gets caught up in a murder investigation. Plenty of nude dancing sequences including several where Ms. Moore spiritedly exhibits what has become through exercise and surgery quite the hardbody. If Demi could only dance…. Overall Arousal Rating B+/B
32. Bolero
Bo Derek stars as a young woman on a quest to lose her virginity. The plot, acting, and film direction are preposterously bad - as amateurish as the average soft-core exploitation film. But in what is hardly a movie...some good camera artistry, hot sex, and Bo’s amazingly perfect body fully and openly naked in 5-6 scenes, raise her nude presence into an art form. Overall Arousal Rating B+/B
33. Delta of Venus
In yet another sophisticated softcore Zalman King production about sexual discovery, a timid female erotic fiction writer strives to broaden her sexual horizons for the sake of her art. The film is loaded with nudity & fervent sex and centers on sexual experimentation as she engages in varied sexual liaisons and nude modeling. Overall Arousal Rating B+/B
34. Summer Lovers (Full Screen Edition)
Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher play a young couple vacationing in the Greek Islands, who befriend one of the uninhibited locals (French actress Valérie Quennessen). The film is a lighthearted look at the natural development of their intimacies in a culture of free spirited Europeans and beautiful topless beaches. Lots of casual, easygoing, public nudity. Overall Arousal Rating B
35. Last Tango in Paris
A young bored Parisian woman (Maria Schneider) and a grieving middle-aged man (Marlon Brando) enter into a sordid sexual affair, The sex is almost brutal in nature, as it is based almost entirely on anger & discontent, and as such I found it as depressing as I did arousing. Still, you cannot deny the film’s sheer erotic power, and on a lighter note, Ms. Schneider, often nude in the film, is built like the proverbial brickhouse. Overall Arousal Rating B
36. Species
Natasha Henstridge stars in this sci-fi flick containing bountiful sex & nudity, including 2 scenes where Natasha promptly strips naked to entice her victim into sex. It’s no accident there are two sequels. She is absolutely gorgeous. Overall Arousal Rating B
37. Paris, France
An edgy erotic comedy/drama that explores one woman’s (Leslie Hope) fantasies, and the difficulties in turning fantasies into reality. The film contains several, somewhat kinky, voyeuristic, sex scenes and miles of female and male nudity. Some of it seems forced - not surprising, given the film’s theme, but if you like sex scenes with assertive women who are intent on being kinky, you’ll love this film. Overall Arousal Rating B-
38. Where the Truth Lies (Unrated Theatrical Edition)
An interesting murder mystery loaded with nudity and realistic sex, this film would have been more exciting had it starred someone other than Allison Lohman, who is beautiful, but lacks sexual dynamism in two of the film’s sex scenes. The film has its moments, though, and the other actress’ sex/nude scenes are good. Overall Arousal Rating B-
39. The Monkey's Mask (2000)
Kelly McGillis plays a private investigator who enters into a passionate affair with a female poetry professor. If you prize lesbian sex, you will cherish this film; if not, you will still revel in its’ casually enticing nudity. Overall Arousal Rating B-
40. Eyes Wide Shut
A wife’s (Nicole Kidman) confession of adulterous fantasies propels an immature husband (Tom Cruise) into a sexual quest of his own. The film has some enticing nudity (a brief shot of Kidman proves she has the best butt in mainstream film) but Tom’s encounter with a hooker and visit to a secret sex club are too surreal to be highly arousing. Honorable Mention
Ken Park (Uncut Uncensored Director's Version - Import)
Very graphic sex and nudity in this uncensored version of a gritty film about California teenagers and their dysfunctional families. This uncensored version is available only in PAL format, however, which will not play on regular American DVD players. The NTSC version is censored through blurring.
Wild Side
Anne Heche plays a prostitute in a movie with lots of sex, nudity and a great lesbian love scene with Joan Chen in the 111 minute uncut version. No uncut Region 1 DVD is available, however, and most of the 16 deleted minutes not shown in this version are sex/nude scenes.
Full Body Massage [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Australia ]
Mimi Rogers is naked much of the time, and in the most arousing massage scene ever filmed, her humongous breasts are oiled up and massaged by Bryan Brown in a sequence that lasts almost four minutes. Unfortunately, Region 1 DVDs of this film with NTSC format are generally unavailable. This is an import in PAL format.
Footnotes
1. Eliminated were such films as Monster's Ball (Halle Berry/Billy Bob Thornton) - with arguably the hottest mainstream sex scene of all time, Pretty Baby (Susan Sarandon posing for a photographer) and The Hot Spot (Jennifer Connelly nude on beach) - with perhaps the sexiest nude scenes. Great stuff, but not enough of it in the film.
2. Eliminated were slasher, beach bimbo, Playboy, Torchlight-type productions, Russ Meyer films (most of which are in PAL format), and Roger Corman’s Big Bad Mama, which was actually quite enticing.
3. Excluded were such tempting foreign skin-romance/comedies as Emmanuelle, Vanessa, Felicity, Frivolous Lola, & Ursula Andress’ The Sensuous Nurse. Of special note are the excluded romance dramas, Betty Blue (Unrated Director's Cut) and Malena Uncut Special Edition 2 DVD Set [Import] (both subtitled) with Beatrice Dalle and Monica Belluci, respectively, as the stunningly sensual heroines.
4. Though a high rating would tend to indicate I enjoyed the movie (I do in fact enjoy being aroused), the rankings do not reflect the film’s overall enrichment value, social utility, or enjoyability.
The explicitness of a film’s sex scenes, while important, did not guarantee a place on my list. By way of example, Irreversible, a subtitled film again starring beautiful Monica Bellucci, is notorious for having one of the most graphic & violent mainstream rape scenes ever filmed - lasting over 9 minutes. The violence didn't do it for me, though, and the film wouldn't make my list in any case.
Also containing pervasive nudity and sex was Auto Focus, a story about Bob Crane (star of Hogan's Heroes) who was apparently addicted to sex and prostitutes. The emptiness of Crane's life was so depressing, however, it was difficult for me to get excited about the film.
