Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A Sixth Sense wannabe for teenagers, The Invisible is a loosely adapted remake of the 2002 Swedish thriller Den Osynlige, and begins with a promising supernatural scenario: When wealthy teenager Nick Powell (Justin Chatwin) is nearly beaten to death by his sullen, alienated classmate Annie Newton (Margarita Levieva) and her tough-punk friends, he's left for dead and his disappearance draws the attention of local detectives while his widowed mother (Marcia Gay Harden) remains in a grieving state of shock. But Nick isn't dead yet, and now his invisible spirit is roaming among the living, struggling to prevent his own death while fixed in a state of metaphysical limbo. Can he be seen and heard by some people, but not others? Even though he's essentially a ghost, can he influence the physical world around him? Can he lead police to discover his near-dead body? Can he save Annie from the fate that awaits her? These are questions that The Invisible struggles to answer in a muddled, inconsistent screenplay that fails to play by its own rules--it's just one unconvincing scene after another, devoid of suspense or supernatural thrills. It's anyone's guess why director David S. Goyer (a successful screenwriter whose credits include Blade and Batman Begins) was drawn to this weakly plotted story, which is derivative, illogical, and overly melodramatic. That may explain why The Invisible vanished after its brief theatrical release, destined for a long shelf-life on DVD. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description
From the producers of The Sixth Sense comes the gripping suspense-filled mystery, The Invisible. Nick Powell is a handsome young writer with a future as bright as he is. Then one tragic night he’s brutally attacked and left for dead — except he’s not. He’s trapped in a ghostly limbo where no one can see or hear him. Except for Annie, the one person who must get closer to Nick in order to save him from beyond his worst nightmare. If together they can quickly solve the mystery of his murder before it is too late, there’s a chance he’ll live again.

eh, October 20, 2007

This one sounded really good when I rented it. I thought Disturbia was a decent teen version of Rear Window. I was hoping this movie might be a teen version of The Sixth Sense. It was much closer to Ghost however. The major problems with the story is the unlikeability of just about every character on screen. Also the movie breaks many of the rules it sets up early. It is really a muddle script and could have been much better if it was polished. This one won't be watched again.

Well at least there's not a kiss at the end (groan), October 19, 2007
Establishes its mood nicely and presents an interesting conception of a suspended state between life and death, but is fatally and irredeemably flawed by its insistence on glamorizing the very character whose cruel and brutal act leads to the tragedy that drives the whole film. For some reason the filmmakers want to make this sociopath out to be sympathetic, and even cast the role with someone so implausibly attractive that from the very beginning you suspect that you're about to be jerked around in predictable Hollywood fashion. Far better to have skipped the strained "redemption" theme and gone for a satisfying come-uppance where the "dead" kid revives and dramatically identifies his attackers.

There are annoying loose ends (whatever became of the best friend, and why is the "invisible" kid able to communicate only with the lowlife who nearly murdered him in the first place?) and it's never explained why this character who nearly murdered him has to be the one to talk him back to life. In fact, the two come so close to kissing at the end that I nearly threw my sneaker at the TV. (Fortunately, at least somebody connected to this project had the restraint not to go there.)

Great acting saves mediocre story..., April 29, 2007
By Anthony Manno (Mt. Prospect, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Invisible (Theatrical Release)
The promotions for THE INVISIBLE are misleading. The main promotion is "How do you solve a murder when the victim is you?" The problem with this tagline is that Nick Powell knows exactly who his killer is. The audience also knows. THE INVISIBLE is not about finding the killer or learning the killer's motive. Viewers know all this--why bother watching the rest of the movie?

The real reason to watch THE INVISIBLE is not the story. It is mediocre from start to finish, and the ending really does not fit. Watch this movie for the cast. The stars pull off great performances despite the story they are working with. The actors bring Nick, Annie, Pete, Marcus, and Nick's mother to life.

I give THE INVISIBLE extra credit for being different than I expected. I give the stars extra points for keeping my interest even though the story was weak.

[PG-13: Violence, Brief Language, Brief Sexuality, Criminal Behavior, ]
