Settlements of Chukotka

       According to the data on the 1st of January, 2002 population of the Chukotsky Autonomous Okrug is 73870 people. Density of the population is 0,1 people per one square kilometer. Herein people living in cities comprise about 70,0% of the population.
      The number of the population has been decreasing for the last years. This fact is connected with migration processes and drain of the definite part of people from the Okrug. Thus, in 1998 97.3 thousand people lived at the territory of the Okrug, in 1999 – 83.5 thousand people, in 2000 – 80 thousand people.
     The Bilibinsky Rayon is the most densely populated Rayon of Chukotka. 8.382 people live there.7.119 people live in the Anadyrsky Rayon, 6.042 people — in the Chaunsky Rayon. The population of the Providensky Rayon comprises 4.505 people, of the Iultinsky Rayon — 3.916 people, of the Chukotsky Rayon — 4.587 people, of the Beringovsky Rayon — 2.782 people. 2.339 people live in the Schmidtovsky Rayon.
      As for ethnic essence the Okrug's population is multinational. More than 50 nationalities live there including representatives of 16 native peoples of the North — the Chukchi, Eskimo, Evens, Koryaks, Chuvans, Yukagirs, Tunguses, Nenetses, Lamuts and others.
     The national composite of the Okrug's population is the following:
         Russians — 66,1%;
         Ukrainians — 16.8%;
         native peoples of the North — 9.8% (including the Chukchi — 7.3%; the Eskimo — 0,9% the Evens — 0,8%; the Chuvans — 0,6%);
         Belorussians — 1,9%;
         other nationalities 5.4%.
      Modern ethnic processes which take place in Chukotka are characterized by rapprochement of nations. By the 80s of the last century already 20% of all marriages were mixed, with the half of those marriages with representatives of newcomers, mostly with Russians. As for such indigenous peoples as the Kereks, Yukagirs and Chuvans there are practically no monoethnic marriages among them. (Herein, marriages between men-newcomers and women of the native population prevail in mixed marriages of the Chukchi, Eskimo, Evens and other peoples of the North. Marriages between men of the native population and Slavic women are considerably rare).

There are 3 cities (Anadyr, Bilibino, Pevek), 15 urban settlements of urban type, 45 villages and 8 districts (rayons) in the Chukot Autonomous Okrug.
