Imagin

Imagin (イマジン Imajin?, from "imagine") are a fictional race that are the antagonists in the Kamen Rider Series Kamen Rider Den-O. They are creatures that emerge from the distant future, arriving in the year 2007 to find weak-hearted humans and wreak havoc. Imagin possess these humans, fashioning a physical form by searching through the host's memory for figures found in folklore and myths. The hosts, recognized by the sands of time spilling from their bodies, are offered a single wish by the Imagin. In exchange, the Imagin is able to dive into the most treasured moment of the person's past. As displayed, however, the host must remember making the contract for the Imagin to successfully travel to the past. Additionally, due to the greatly delicate nature of the contract, if the contract holder forgets or dies before the contract is completed, the Imagin bound to him or her would fade out of existence. Opening the human like a door, a portal is revealed that leads to the appropriate time, severing their ties to the human in the process. From there, the Imagin takes over a host's body or simply manifests itself in its physical form and begins causing massive chaos. In turn, due to the laws of time, everything and everyone destroyed in the past no longer exists in the present.

[edit] Singularity Points

A "Singularity Point" (特異点 Tokuiten?) in Kamen Rider Den-O is a human who has the ability to exist outside of time itself, and be unaffected by changes in their own past. This ability also allows them to suppress an Imagin's will when it takes over their body and is not tempted by the free wish an Imagin can grant. Because of this, the Imagin contracted to Singularity Points are usually unable to take a physical form in the present time, and directly possess their Singularity Point, instead. They usually reside within time itself and when they are not possessing their Singularity Point, they stay on some sort of Train of Time, such as the DenLiner or the ZeroLiner. The Singularity Points also have the ability to become Kamen Riders, and the Imagin that possess them lend their abilities in combat when called upon. In other instances, the Imagin use their Singularity Point's body as they wish when the Singularity Point loses consciousness. As long as the Singularity Point is conscious, he can expel the Imagin from his body and send it back to the Train of Time that he uses as a Kamen Rider. In all cases of Imagin possession, the Singularity Point's eyes change color to that of the Imagin, the hair will grow or change in style, and a streak of hair will also change color to that of the Imagin. Masaru Honjō, Kintaros' original contractor, is the only other human who has been possessed by an Imagin and fit these criteria under these contexts, but is not a Kamen Rider. This may be due to the wish he asked of Kintaros.

[edit] Den-O's Imagin

The Rider Pass that Ryotaro Nogami uses to become Kamen Rider Den-O can summon at least four Imagin. Each of these Imagin gives Den-O their power when they are called upon with each form suiting to their fighting style. These Imagin are collectively known as the Tarōs (タロウズ Tarōzu?) due to their namesakes. When not possessing Ryotaro, the Tarōs spend their time in the DenLiner's dining car. However, they are also able to enter physical time and space by possessing vacant forms, such as full-body costumes, although this leaves them physically unstable. For a short time, Den-O had a fifth Imagin, Sieg.

[edit] Momotaros

Momotaros (Naomi is in the background) on the DenLiner

Momotaros (モモタロス Momotarosu?) is the first Imagin that gives Ryotaro his power, which allows for the Sword Form transformation. His natural weapon as an Imagin is a sword named the Momotarosword (モモタロスォード Momotaroswōdo?). Momotaros blamed Ryotaro for his Oni-like form, though it matches his personality, best described as hot blooded, arrogant, and comedic, serving as a foil to Ryotaro's own shy and cowardly personality. In fact, Momotaros was more interested in fighting than carrying out the Imagin goal. Unfortunately, he is constantly beaten by Hana when he gets Ryotaro into trouble. When he possesses Ryotaro, declaring the words "I have arrived!" (俺、参上! Ore, sanjō!?) Momotaros's own personality takes over, giving Ryotaro power, confidence, and a bit of his eagerness for a good fight. His eagerness is shown in battle, where he always declares the words, "I am, from the start (to the finish), at the climax!" (俺は最初から(最後まで)クライマックスだぜ! Ore wa saisho kara (saigo made) kuraimakkusu da ze!?). Momotaros is also somewhat selfish, initially fighting alongside Ryotaro in order to ensure his own survival. Though he unknowingly placed Ryotaro in unneeded danger to suit his fancy, Momotaros eventually learned to respect him. Though he demands respect, Momotaros usually put at his place by Hana and her powerful punches. He also does not know how to swim, has a narcotic reaction to red peppers, and seems to be afraid of dogs. While he acts hostile and demeaning to the other Tarōs, he does care about them, proven by hiding his anguish while they were slowly disappearing. Momotaros is the base for Den-O's Climax Form, as he has control of the head and torso and can control the other sections that the other Tarōs usually have primary control of if need be. However, due to the same newly-formed railway that turned Hana to a child, Momotaros' synch with Ryotaro was negated. However, his power is now accessed in the DenKamen Sword's Momo-Sword Mode.

When insulting another Imagin, he usually calls them a "X jerk" (X野郎 X yarō?), while referring to Hana as "Stinky Flower-Girl" (ハナクソ女 Hanakuso On'na?). He usually refers to Urataros and Kintaros as "Turtle", "Turtle Boy", "Turtle jerk" (カメ、カメ公、カメ野郎 Kame, Kamekō, Kame yarō?) and "Bear", "Bear Boy", "Bear jerk" (クマ、クマ公、クマ野郎 Kuma, Kumakō, Kuma yarō?) respectively, he calls the younger Ryutaros a "Brat" (小僧、ガキ Kozō, Gaki?), and "Snot-nosed Brat" (ハナタレ小僧 Hanatare Kozō?). He calls Deneb a "Fat" (オデブ Odebu?). He also puts emphasis on his Extreme Slash attack when Den-O, calling it "My Hissatsu Attack, Part X" (俺の必殺技パートX Ore no hissatsu waza pāto X?), with a Part 1, 2, 2’(Two-Dash), 3, and 5 (Ryotaro tells Momotaros that he skipped 4, but he considers not using 4 "cool", even counting from 1-10 while skipping 4). His form is based on the legend of Momotarō, the Peach Boy, who fought the red Oni that Momotaros resembles.

[edit] Urataros

Urataros on the DenLiner
Urataros on the DenLiner

Urataros (ウラタロス Uratarosu?) is the second Imagin that gives Ryotaro his power, which allows for the Rod Form transformation. The form given to him by Ryotaro is turtle-like in appearance, with his weapon being the Uratarod (ウラタロッド Urataroddo?), a rod with hexagonal blades at each end. Furthermore, Urataros was well-aware of Ryotaro being a Singularity Point, making his contract to him on purpose--though he said it was to evade the loneliness of being outside time, Hana later debunked this entirely. When he possesses Ryotaro, he usually states the words, "May I string you along?" (僕に釣られてみる? Boku ni tsuraretemiru??). He's also aware of the evil Imagin planning to destroy time, but simply does not want to commit it. Despite his cool exterior, there's indication that he's somewhat of a coward and lies just for self preservation. Urataros is a casanova with a very convincing personality, owning the ability to convince almost anyone by speaking to them, stating that each one his words contains a hundred hooks, a thousand fabrications, and ten thousand lies. It's due to this philosophy that no one but Ryotaro trusts him. At first, he and Momotaros fought each other due to clashing personalities, creating havoc upon the DenLiner and Ryotaro's body until the Owner had Ryotaro choose to discard Urataros or share his Rider Pass with him. Urataros was shocked when Ryotaro chose to keep him, with Ryotaro saying that he had a good heart, deep down on the inside feeling that even though lying is wrong, if one lies for another, it indicates they have a good heart. Urataros, however, later said that he lies simply for the sake of lying ("One lie is more interesting than a thousand truths."), and seemed quite irritated that Ryotaro was "trivializing his lies". While Momotaros got Ryotaro in trouble through reckless methods, Urataros puts Ryotaro in conflicting situations when he goes around wooing multiple women. As part of being a liar and a convincer, Urataros is the best speaker of the Taros, and has possessed Ryotaro simply to get information out of someone, or to talk his way out of something (cf: when Ryotaro was arrested for kidnapping, Urataros is able to get him exonerated, apparently cramping the hand of the stenographer in the process). Despite these negative traits however, he does shown genuine concern for Ryotaro's well being, as well as becoming enraged due to the multiple deaths caused by the Gigandeath created from the Kraken Imagin in the past. During the movie, Urataros possesses the Ryotaro that Yuto brought to the Mesozoic for the Climax Scene. This resulted in him fading from existence were it not for Ryotaro's feelings condensing his remains into the Keitaros, restoring him to normal while allowing Urataros to form the right shoulder armor of Den-O's Climax Form until his synch with Ryotaro was negated. However, his power is now accessed in the DenKamen Sword's Ura-Rod Mode.

He usually refers to Momotaros and Kintaros as "Sempai" (先輩 Senpai?) and "Bear", "Kin-chan" (クマ, キンちゃん Kuma, Kin-chan?) respectively. His form is based on the legend of Urashima Tarō, who rescued a sea turtle and was granted a visit to the palace of Ryūjin.

[edit] Kintaros

Kintaros on the DenLiner
Kintaros on the DenLiner

Kintaros (キンタロス Kintarosu?) is the third Imagin that gives Ryotaro his power, which allows for the Ax Form transformation. He is vaguely modeled after a bear and has a Sumo wrestler-like personality. He also has a habit of deep sleeping (akin to hibernation) until the mere mentioning of any word that sounds remotely similar to the Japanese word for "to cry" (泣く naku?) often provokes Kintaros out of his nap to possess Ryotaro in an instant. He speaks in a Kansai-ben, saying, "My strength will bring you to tears. Wipe your tears off with this" (俺の強さに、お前が泣いた。涙はこれで拭いとけ Ore no tsuyosa ni, omae ga naita. Namida wa kore de fuitoke?), whenever he possesses Ryotaro, taking out a handkerchief for whoever wants to wipe their tears off with. His natural weapon as an Imagin is a giant axe named the Kintaros Ax (キンタロスアックス Kintarosu Akkusu?). He has a habit of popping his neck every time he begins and ends a battle. Kintaros is a strong Imagin who constantly seeks opponents stronger than him. Unfortunately, he is sometimes unable to control his own strength resulting in accidentally destroying things, which he attempts to fix afterwards. At first, he was dependent on a retired karateka named Masaru Honjō, who gave him his "bear"ish look, as he attempted to master karate so Masaru could achieve the "ultimate karate." Kintaros wanted to teach Masaru the ultimate karate, in order to let him settle things with Kikuchi. Kintaros had no intention of disturbing the time stream, and only wanted to protect Masaru's life. Kintaros cared deeply about Masaru, and almost gave his life to protect him from the Rhino Imagin. Seeing the good side of Kintaros, Ryotaro allowed Kintaros to enter him, to the shock of both Momotaros and Urataros. Kintaros was also almost thrown out of the DenLiner for disrupting the flow of time, but was allowed to stay as the change in the past negated the present events that led to his banishment. During the movie, Kintaros possesses the Ryotaro that Yuto brought to the Edo Era to aid in the Climax Scene. But this resulted in him fading from existence were it not for Ryotaro's feelings condensing his remains into the Keitaros, restoring him to normal while allowing Kintaros to form the left shoulder armor of Den-O's Climax Form until his synch with Ryotaro was negated. However, his power is now accessed in the DenKamen Sword's Kin-Ax Mode.

He usually refers to Momotaros as "Peach" (桃の字 Momo no Ji?) (Mispronouncing his name as "Momonga" (モモンガ Momonga?, Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel), "Momohiki" (モモヒキ Momohiki?, Long Underpants)) and refers to Urataros as "Turtle" (亀の字 Kame no Ji?). His form is based on the legend of Kintarō, the Golden Boy, who wielded an axe, had immense strength, and sumo wrestled bears.

[edit] Ryutaros

Ryutaros on the DenLiner
Ryutaros on the DenLiner

Ryutaros (リュウタロス Ryūtarosu?) is the fourth Imagin that gives Ryotaro his power, which allows for Gun Form transformation. His natural weapon as an Imagin is a shotgun named the Ryuvolver (リュウボルバー Ryūborubā?). Though he was the last Imagin to appear, Ryutaros actually tried to possess Ryotaro the moment that Urataros did, and simply hid himself from the others. Ryutaros revealed him in his form when he was attracted by Naomi's coffee inside the DenLiner. Ryutaros is most childish in personality with a love for drawing and animals. Ryutaros also appears to enjoy break dancing, to the point in which it's incorporated into his fighting style. This recklessness also causes the battlefield to become wasted after several minutes. When he possesses Ryotaro, he first asks "Is it okay if…?" (…いい? …Ii??, usually "Is it okay if I beat you up?" or "Is it okay if I end it?") followed by "I don't hear an answer" (答えは聞いてない Kotae wa kiitenai?) as if he did not hear a response. He has the ability to control people simply by snapping his fingers. This tactic works with summoning the Machine DenBird as well. Somehow, Ryutaros said he was told that he would be able to become DenLiner's conductor by defeating Ryotaro. The same person also gave him a ticket, although he does not remember any more than that. However, because he does not wish for Airi to cry, he decides not to destroy Ryotaro. The only individual he will listen to is Airi, whom he affectionately calls "big sister" (お姉ちゃん onee-chan?) (Ryotaro only calls her the more formal "elder sister" (姉さん nee-san?)). Because he knows that Airi has loved Yuto Sakurai, and from faulty advice on love from Kintaros, he becomes jealous of Yuto and wishes to show that he is stronger than him. This disaster ends in Ryutaros being stopped by Ryotaro, this time with a severe warning. Ryutaros is also credited with being the one who allowed Sieg to come upon the DenLiner, even allowing him access to a luxurious train car. During the movie, Ryutaros possesses the Ryotaro that Yuto brought for the Climax Scene. But this resulted in him fading from existence were it not for Ryotaro's feelings condensing his remains into the Keitaros, restoring him to normal while allowing Ryutaros to form the chest armor of Den-O's Climax Form until his synch with Ryotaro was negated. However, Ryutaros drew up the concept design of the DenKamen Sword, his power now accessed in the Ryu-Gun Mode.

He usually refers to Urataros and Kintaros as "Turtle-chan" (カメちゃん Kame-chan?) and "Bear-chan" (クマちゃん Kuma-chan?) respectively, excluding Momotaros as he's not based on an animal. He is referred to by the others as "Ryuta" (リュウタ Ryūta?). After this initial arrival on the DenLiner, he is rarely seen without a pair of headphones over his head. Early promotional material stated that his form is based on the legend of Tatsu no Ko Tarō, or Taro the Dragon Boy. tv asahi's website for Den-O states that his form is based on Ryotaro's mental image of dragons.

[edit] Sieg

Sieg, the Swan Imagin, on the DenLiner
Sieg, the Swan Imagin, on the DenLiner

Sieg (ジーク Jīku?) is the Imagin who arrived 6 months prior to Ryotaro becoming Den-O, originally intending to forge a contract with a young wealthy woman named Shiori Takayama. But she was pregnant and Sieg ended up inside the baby in a deep sleep until he emerges in physical form with no memory of the wish and believes that he forged a contract with the baby instead of Shiori as he had planned. Sieg took his "brother" out of the strange area he found them in, only to meet Ryutaros who takes Sieg to the DenLiner, where the Imagin got his own sleeping car with a lavish bed and Ryutaros helped fill it with stray puppies and kittens. Because of his princely mannerisms, Sieg becomes easily infuriated when treated with disrespect. Because he was "born" in 2007, Sieg possesses extrodinary unique abilities like making other Imagin shrink to four inches in height for a bit of time with the phrase "Your head is high!" (頭が高い! Zu ga takai!?, literally means "stuck-up" or "haughty") and it appears that no other Imagin, including Ryutaros, can force him out of Ryotaro's body. When possessing Ryotaro, Sieg says "Advent, above it all…" (降臨、満を持して… Kōrin, man o jishite…?). Because Yusuke's mind is too young to maintain Sieg's existence, he begins to fade away, but not before becoming Den-O Wing Form to fight the Scorpion Imagin. After the Scorpion Imagin is defeated, Ryotaro returns with a Rider Ticket that he got from Shiori that bore the date June 1, 1997, revaling that Sieg did have a contract with her. He then remembers Shiori's wish for her baby to born safely, fulfilling that contract. And with the gang's help, arrived to past to live peacefully. However, during the movie, Sieg offers his aid to Ryotaro in the Tarōs' stead, battling the Cobra Imajin at the Edo Era while befriending Kotaro.

In his short time on the DenLiner, he demanded that the others call him "Prince" (プリンス Purinsu?) and asked for Hana to be his "Princess" ( Hime?), and was punched for each time he called her that. Sieg is based on the swan in the story of Swan Lake (白鳥の湖 Hakuchō no Mizūmi?) and named after its Prince Siegfried (the word "Swan" is written on his breastplate).[1]

[edit] Zeronos' Imagin

The system that Yuto Sakurai uses to become Kamen Rider Zeronos allows for him to be contracted to at least one Imagin. This Imagin allows for Zeronos to assume Vega Form.

[edit] Deneb

Deneb in his physical form
Deneb in his physical form

Deneb (デネブ Denebu?) is currently the sole Imagin fully contracted to the Yuto Sakurai that has revealed himself, meaning he is able to hold a physical form within normal space-time. He serves as Yuto's butler and fights along side Yuto while he's in Altair Form, able to shoot bullets out of his fingertips that range from attacking an enemy to smoke pellets. He also provide Zeronos with his Vega form. He carries around a basket that contains hand-made candies that have wrappers that bear his face called "Deneb Candy" (デネブキャンディー Denebu Kyandī?). His personality is the polar opposite of Yuto's, with Deneb's noble demeanor usually resulting in embarrassing consequences done to Yuto, who comically beats him up for it. Although Yuto treats him with occasional disrespect; Deneb chooses to stand by his side out of friendship and loyalty, knowing Yuto to be a kind person. Feeling guilty for wasting Yuto's second to last ticket, he decides to stop being a burden to Yuto and offers his services to Ryotaro. But it took Ryotaro and Momotaro's words to convince Deneb to return to Yuto.

After Yuto used his final card, Deneb felt at ease there Yuto wouldn't need to suffer the side effects anymore. That was until Sakurai came with a new Zeronos Card and a full card holder. Deneb drove the man out with intent not to have Yuto suffer again, but was forced to allow Yuto to use them when he wanted to.

Deneb's physical form is based on the historical story of Benkei and Karasu-Tengu. He is named after the star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus the Swan which is important in the legend of the Tanabata, as Deneb serves as the connection between lovers Hikoboshi (Altair) and Orihime (Vega) while they are across from each other in the Milky Way. "Altair" and "Vega" are also the names of the two forms that Zeronos can access.
