How to find information about individuals who served in these regiments and corps

Units are listed in order of precedence on the eve of the reorganisation of 1903 which united the regiments of the Bengal, Madras and Bombay Armies into one numerical sequence. The regimental numbering shown here was instituted in 1865. The new 1903 numbers are shown in the right margin, along with post-1860 dates of formation of new units. Gaps in the 1902 numbering caused by earlier disbandments were not filled during the 1903 renumbering (e.g. no 118th Infantry was formed in 1903 because the 18th Bombay had disbanded). The designation "Native" in regimental titles had been omitted in 1885. The designation "Regiment of" was actually omitted in 1901, but continues to be shown in this list.
