Other Mailing Lists:

As well as the Huguenots-Walloons-Europe (HWE) mailing list, there are several other mailing lists which focus on Huguenot and/or Walloon research. They are:

~ Huguenot-L:

This is a Rootsweb list which has been in existence since 1998. For most of that time, it has been mainly concerned with Huguenots who settled in the United States, although discussion of other geographical locations is both acceptable and appropriate.

You can get an idea of the type of discussion going on there by visiting the list's threaded archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/huguenot and browsing through past messages which are arranged chronologically by year and then monthly.

To subscribe to the Huguenot-L list, address your request to either: Huguenot-L-request@rootsweb.com (if you'd like to join in list or mail mode) or to Huguenot-D-request@rootsweb.com (for subscribing in digest mode). In both cases, put only the word subscribe in the message and in the subject line.

The administrator for the Huguenot-L mailing list can be contacted at: Huguenot-admin@rootsweb.com.

~ Huguenot-Walloon list:

This is another Rootsweb list which began in February 2002. It has a focus on Huguenots and Walloons of the 1600s who emigrated either to the Netherlands and/or the West Indies and, from there, to the U.S.

You can get an idea of the type of discussion going on there by visiting the list's threaded archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/huguenot-walloon and browsing through past messages which are arranged chronologically by year and then monthly.

To subscribe to the Huguenot-Walloon list, address your request to either: Huguenot-Walloon-L-request@rootsweb.com (if you'd like to join in list or mail mode) or to Huguenot-Walloon-D-request@rootsweb.com (for subscribing in digest mode). In both cases, put only the word subscribe in the message and in the subject line.

The administrator for the Huguenot-Walloon mailing list can be contacted at: Huguenot-Walloon-admin@rootsweb.com.

Note: There is also a U.S. Huguenot Message Board where queries can be posted. For further information about this Message Board, click here.

~ Huguenots-Holland list:

This is a list sponsored by Yahoo!Groups (formerly eGroups), ie. it is not a Rootsweb list. The language used on Huguenots-Holland is Dutch. The list description states that the focus is on "Huguenot families who came to the Netherlands during the Huguenot wars" and that it is for "serious subscribers with the intention to help each other in their family research and to share information."  There is a list archives but it appears to be accessible only to list members.

For further information about Huguenots-Holland, please go to either of these two pages: http://www.egroups.com/search?query=huguenots&submit=Search and/or http://www.egroups.com/group/Huguenots-Holland.

The main page of the Yahoo!Groups website is at http://www.egroups.com.

There are many other mailing lists which do not focus on Huguenot research but they may, nevertheless, be useful to you in your research.

~ European and International Lists:

Please consider joining a mailing list for the geographical location where your ancestors once lived (or were thought to have lived). AND, most important, post some queries on that list!! There are all kinds of helpful, knowledgeable people out there who may be able to help you. Even if you decide not to stay for very long, remember that your query will be in the list archives where it can be found by other researchers in the future.

Language need not be a barrier to European inquiries. Some lists accept English. Even for those which do not, a simply-worded inquiry translated via an online service (such as those mentioned on this web site) should work fine. Mention in your posts that you are unfamiliar with the language. Most people will be sympathetic to that and act accordingly.

1) John Fuller's website, Genealogy Resources on the Internet, has a very complete index of mailing lists for Europe, the UK and Ireland. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/internet.html.

Once on this site, scroll down and click on Mailing Lists. Scroll down again, then click on Countries Other Than USA.You will see an alphabetical listing of countries from which you can make a selection. Instructions are there for subscribing. Usually, there is also information as to what language(s) is/are accepted for each list (sometimes English but not always).

Most countries have more than one mailing list. For example, there are many county lists for both England and Ireland. European countries such as France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands also have many lists to choose from.

2) Rootsweb also has information about all the many and varied mailing lists but it's not as complete as John Fuller's site. The URL to go to is: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/. Scroll down and select the International Mailing Lists, then click on the country you are interested in.

~ Surname Lists:

There are mailing lists for many surnames, listed alphabetically, on the Rootsweb site at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/. Each of these mailing lists is focused on research centred around a particular surname. You may want to join one of these lists, if you find one which is for a name you are interested in. If there isn't such a list, you may be able to start one of your own, by contacting Rootsweb with your request.

Note that subscribers on surnames lists are not necessarily interested in Huguenot and/or Walloon research. And they may be researching in geographical areas which are different from the ones you are interested in. _______________________________________________________________
