A Capsule View
Through its five colleges and the Graduate School, Eastern offers degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, master's, and specialist levels; numerous certification programs; and cooperative doctoral programs with the University of Kentucky. EKU students and faculty may also participate in two study-abroad programs. Since students and learning come first at Eastern, the University remains highly committed to excellence in teaching and has a student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1. Classroom learning can also be combined with practical on-the-job experiences in business, industry, and government through the Cooperative Education/Internship programs. The success of Eastern's programs is best shown through alumni who have distinguished themselves in nearly every profession, including education, medicine, law, media, science, government, entertainment, private business, the military, and research. The College of Business and Technology provides educational opportunities to enhance the entrepreneurial, technological, and professional capacity of its students so they can thrive in a competitive global economy. By Spring 2006, EKUBusiness will be housed in a new $14 million facility. The College of Education, with its motto of "to teach, to learn, to help others teach and learn," maintains its strong interest in and commitment to the preparation of teachers. Historically Eastern has graduated more teachers than any other university in the Commonwealth. The College also operates Kentucky's only N-12 laboratory school. The College of Health Sciences is dedicated to preparing successful health care, human services, and human performance professionals with a lifelong commitment to the health and wellness of the total person in the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and environmental domains. The College of Justice and Safety, one of the largest of its type in the United States, includes the Departments of Correctional and Juvenile Justice Studies, Loss Prevention and Safety, and Criminal Justice and Police Studies, all of which exist in response to a changing, dynamic society which demands qualified professional, well-educated personnel. Eastern also boasts an expanded state-of-the-art main library housing 875,000 volumes and seating more than 2,100 students, in addition to a music library and a justice and safety library. The libraries provide many Web-based databases, including the online catalogue, e.Quest. Intercollegiate sports, intramural sports, the fine and performing arts, plus more than 155 other campus organizations, provide students with many opportunities to get involved in campus life, to make new friends, to develop leadership skills, and to be of service to the University and to the Richmond community.
