Cascadia's Mission

Cascadia Community College will be an exemplar of the 21st century community college, a learner-centered, comprehensive, culturally rich, and technologically advanced learning and teaching institution that emphasizes student achievement and educational excellence, seamlessly linked with the community, area enterprise and other educational institutions.

A New Institution

Cascadia Community College has embarked on an historical journey. Together, the faculty, staff and administration opened the first community college in Washington state in 20 years. Cascadia's classes started September 2000. The college has been designed as a leaner-centered, community-focused, technologically advanced institution that emphasizes educational excellence for the 21st century. Cascadia's educators have worked with community leaders to develop an institution that serves as a teaching and learning model for colleges around the country.

Cascadia's campus, located in Bothell in the Puget Sound's high-tech corridor, was built as the most technologically advanced facility of its kind. Cascadia is also unique because it is co-located with the Bothell branch of the University of Washington -- one of the most respected universities west of the Mississippi. The co-location gives students interested in college transfer programs a rare opportunity to attend their first two years at an affordable, yet educationally advanced institution, then transfer seamlessly into the University of Washington for their final two years -- all on the same campus. Cascadia students also have at hand the vast resources of the entire University of Washington library system.

The co-located campus grand opening was a success, and the first year of Cascadia classes are underway, but there is still much work to be done. Cascadia continues to look for talented, creative and experienced faculty to help expand Cascadia's curriculum to meet the needs of learners.

Learning Environment

Cascadia's vision is to create a culturally rich learning environment that employs best teaching and learning practices, diverse pedagogies and delivery methods, and technology-supported student support and learning activities to enhance learning outcomes and foster student success. Faculty play a substantial and comprehensive role in the fulfillment of that vision as Cascadia grows. Faculty will continue to be recruited for their ability to contribute to a diverse learning environment that fosters the achievement of cross-discipline learning outcomes. To achieve those outcomes, faculty employ and blend traditional and emerging pedagogies to expand the continuum of instructional options for students. Those strategies include (but are not limited to): learning communities, team teaching, thematic interdisciplinary courses, evening/weekend cohorts, learning portfolios, lectures, learning laboratories, Interactive Television, and asynchronous learning (online, telecourses, computer-based, etc.).
