Across the country there is evidence of a trend that should raise the spirits of both academic and civic leaders: More than ever before, cities and universities are joining together in mutually beneficial partnerships to promote regional vitality as well as university development. Here in Greater Boston—where higher education is our undisputed global marker—we are determined to elevate this movement to new heights.

On long-abandoned city parcels in Boston's Lower Roxbury, a new housing complex—Davenport Commons and Shawmut Estates—opens to rave reviews. Developed by the city, three local nonprofit developers, and Northeastern University, the complex consists of apartment-style housing for nearly 600 students and 75 affordable home ownership units for community residents.     » READ MORE
Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Northeastern University, and several other institutions are developing ways to extract information from biomedical and biological signals. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Northeastern are measuring the effectiveness of a breast cancer drug and working with other partners to develop nanodevices that can provide the hardware for future biomedical applications. At McLean Hospital, nurses have collaborated with Northeastern on assessments of inpatient units, job satisfaction, and antidepressants for adolescents.
