Funds Sprout to Help Victims' Families

In the days after the Virginia Tech shootings, many nonprofit groups rushed to create funds to help the families of victims and to strengthen campus security in Blacksburg and elsewhere. Here is an update on some of those fund-raising efforts:

  • Virginia Tech set up the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund to cover the costs of grief counseling, memorials, incidental needs, and goods and services used to comfort the families of the victims and the survivors. The fund has raised more than $1-million, including some $800,000 from 8,000 separate online donations.
