University of Maryland University College, the second largest university in Maryland, is one of 11 degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland. For close to sixty years, the university has fulfilled its principle mission: to serve working adults and other nontraditional students by meeting individual learning needs at any time and at any place through the delivery of high quality degree and non-degree programs tailored to the current workforce.

UMUC has more than 88,000 students, 22,000 of which are Maryland residents. Classroom sites can be found throughout Maryland, the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and at over 100 overseas locations. Students can also “attend class” from anywhere in the world by connecting electronically via the Internet.

In 2004-05, UMUC offered 98 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and certificates fully online via WebTycho, the university’s state-of-the-art interactive classroom software. Also in 2004, UMUC received the Prize of Excellence from the International Council for Open and Distance Education for the “highest possible excellence in the fields of open, distance, virtual and flexible learning.

The university also holds the largest contract with the Department of Defense to teach active duty military and their dependents on military installations in Europe and Asia.

Innovative and global in reach and focused on quality, access, and affordability, UMUC is the “Open University” of Maryland and the United States, dedicated to the success of its students.
