Indiana University, Bloomington Campus

Founded in 1820, Indiana University-Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university.

With a world-renowned research reputation, IU-Bloomington is also known for its innovative academic programs and attentiveness to undergraduates.

Faculty are the heart of our campus, and have built 110 programs ranked in the nation's top 20. Twenty-nine graduate programs and four schools at Indiana University-Bloomington are ranked among the top 25 in the country in the U.S. News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools 2001-2002. With over 1600 full-time faculty members, IU Bloomington also leads the Big Ten public universities in the number of endowed faculty positions, with 333 chairs, professorships, and curators.

Campus support for faculty includes internal research grant support and a wide array of research facilities. Bloomington similarly has a national reputation for its varied instructional support services and funding opportunities both for instructional development and for the scholarship of teaching and learning.

There are more than 30 centers, institutes and museums devoted to research on campus, ranging from a 3-D virtual reality environment lab, archaeology and geology labs, multimedia broadcasting and journalism facilities, fine arts studios and new theatre facilities, museums, greenhouses, and several large outdoor nature facilities.

IU library collections are the 13th largest in the country, and include a number of special collections such as the Archives of Traditional Music, and the Lilly Library, which houses rare books, manuscripts, and special collections that serve as a resource for scholars throughout the world as well as acenter of cultural enrichment. As a complement to its libraries and special collections, IU Bloomington has also earned a position of leadership in information technology. In an interview with Forbes magazine, the president of Intel said, " If you want to see the future of information technology, check out what is happening at Indiana University."

The Bloomington campus is one of the most wired universities in the country, with 40 public computing labs and easy access on and off campus to the university network. Indiana University's new supercomputer, recently acquired through a partnership with IBM, is the largest and fastest university-owned computer in the U.S, and will serve as a backbone for planned research in genomics, informatics and other disciplines in both the arts and sciences.

Time magazine named IU-Bloomington its 2001 College of the Year among major research universities. This recognition highlights the effective programs we have created to help first-year students make the transition to college life on a campus with over 36,000 students. These freshman programs exemplify our efforts to help all students work closely with our outstanding faculty, to forge high-quality, personalized educational experiences at a world-class institution.

Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, Bloomington supports our academic community through partnerships in service-learning, and with a rich array of recreational opportunities and cultural events.
