131 years later

HERALD STAFF

Today this newspaper marks its 131st anniversary with pride but also with humble thanks towards our readers, our advertisers, our staff and everybody who has kept us going all these years. Maintaining our independence has never been easy either in bad times or good (indeed, judging from recent experience, it can sometimes be more difficult in good years than bad) but thanks to you all, we have never felt the pressure to compromise to be overwhelming.
For many of our staff, working on the Herald offers ideal job satisfaction because of its unique status as a small newspaper in a big city — with neither the impersonal size of the metropolitan press nor the parochial focus of small local newspapers — and we would like to think that the reader also enjoys something of this blend, receiving the big picture in a few pages. The weight of 131 years obliges us to balance our perspective constantly by maintaining our traditions while moving ahead with the times. We do not believe in being stuck in the seventies but nor should we forget this newspaper’s stance against the military dictatorship in those years when it stood almost alone among the press. Today there are other issues, other trends and also other technologies. Globalization is a reality which runs into more resistance in Latin America than any other region in the world and we believe in educating Argentina to take a more positive view but we do not subscribe to that globalized style of news coverage which would reduce the whole world to Iraq — Argentina always takes pride of place in this editorial space. We must permanently strive to improve production techniques — introducing colour in the first months of this century was a big step forward for us and upgrading our website should be a constant aim — but we will not slavishly run after such modern ideas as the notion that newspapers should use a 100-word vocabulary in order to maximize readership. Our readers do not deserve that insult to their intelligence.
This newspaper could never claim to be perfect (just run your eye through the letters on this page with reader feedback on that point) but we do honestly feel that we are unique. Please be tolerant with our mistakes (which range from misprints and technical glitches to errors of analysis and which we would never attempt to hide by suppressing readers’ letters) and we will continue to be ourselves in the hope that we reflect something of yourselves too.
