for the quickest to grab, easiest to get to grips with, free open-source (but not necessarily advanced), grab audacity. just google 'audacity' and 'sound' for a download. it runs on windows, linux and mac, and best of all it's open source. if you wanna jump into more advanced pro-tooly kind of stuff, go ahead, but you can achieve heaps with audacity (for free!). ^_^

I recommend SONAR. The latest edition is 6 I think. In my opinion it's just as good as Pro Tools, except it will run on any hardware... It's a big download, 3GB from memory but it's definately worth it.
