Anywhere But Here (1999)(Widescreen)
Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman play Adele and Ann August, a small-town mother and daughter who head to Beverly Hills to have a taste of finer life in Anywhere But Here. Adele's a dreamer, a kooky, self-absorbed mother of a dutiful, practical daughter and she's decided Ann could be a star. Life is a scraped-together existence, though, on the wrong side of Beverly Hills. Adele teaches in depressing public school, and Ann tries to achieve as much normalcy as possible, with the lights being turned off due to unpaid bills and a mother who's more boy-crazy than she is. Adele uses her Southern charm, and Ann scolds, but the film feels stale, with little to show besides tensions, dependencies, and mother and daughter's inevitable growing apart. With the recent Tumbleweeds covering the same material with a fresher, funnier and deeper take, or Slums of Beverly Hills making better satire of the L.A. scene, Anywhere But Here just doesn't make for a compelling picture. The lead performances are fine — Sarandon, in particular, keeps Adele interesting in spite of the cliches. Competent direction keeps the story moving along, but there's little that's interesting to see along this familiar road.

20th Century Fox presents Anywhere But Here in a gorgeous anamorphic widescreen display (2.35:1 aspect ratio) with a standard set of DVD perks: Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 Surround Sound in English and 2.0 Surround Sound in French, English and Spanish subtitles, and the film's theatrical trailer. A five-minute featurette includes interviews with Sarandon, Portman, and director Wayne Wang.
