Biker Boyz (2003)(Widescreen)
Biker Boyz the DVD is much like Biker Boyz the movie: It looks slick, sounds loud, and runs on empty. That's because there's not much to either the disc or the movie, the latter being a pallid Fast and the Furious wannabe about a street-racing circuit where middle-class, predominantly African-American professionals trade in their power suits for high-powered motorcycles on the weekends.

The Biker Boyz disc's 1.85:1 widescreen video does a decent job capturing the action, delivering a clean image laced with the outlandish colors the titular racers drape themselves and their vehicles in. There are a few incidents of edge-enhancement and pixilation, but you have to look for them. The audio, available in Dolby 5.1 and DTS, is appropriately burly when it should be. But although it will leave your ears ringing, the sound design is surprisingly flat, rarely using the back speakers outside the racing scenes.

The extras on the Biker Boyz DVD also rarely shift into high gear. The making of featurette is your average, bland, promotional piece, with everyone interviewed talking about how great it was to work on the project, etc. However, it does offer some pleasures, like watching real-life motorcycle fanatic Laurence Fishburne expertly command his vehicle while other, less street-savvy actors struggle. Missing is are the requisite deleted scenes; had any been included, they would've made Boyz's 111-minute run-time even more sluggish. Motorcycle fans might enjoy the photo gallery, which includes some choice snapshots, but anyone would be hard-pressed to be excited by the thin cast and crew bios. Rounding out the disc are a few trailers—for Head of State, Old School, Deliver Us from Eva, and the new Fast and the Furious: Tricked Out Edition DVD. Unfortunately, the last trailer serves as reminder of how a street-racing movie should be done, and how Biker Boyz can't compete.
