With less than 70 days left before Yeosu's fate -- as far as the 2012 World Expo is concerned -- is decided, the port city's bidding committee is working hard to secure undecided votes by hosting an international symposium.
The Yeosu Bidding Committee for the 2012 International Exposition announced Tuesday (Sept. 11) that it will hold its second international symposium on the theme ¡°Global Warming and ¡®The Living Ocean and Coast'¡± in Seoul and Yeosu from Sep. 12 to 16.
Along with 170 delegates from the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) member countries, Alvin Toffler; 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus; climate experts like Dr. Peter Bridgewater, secretary-general of the International Wetlands Treaty; Special Envoy on Climate Change of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Han Seung-soo; and other world-renowned scholars will attend the upcoming symposium.
Kim, Jae-Chul, chairman of Yeosu's Bidding Committee, said, ¡°The participants and BIE officials will play an important role in the final vote on Nov. 27. We will lure more votes by stressing the timeliness of the symposium's theme and Yeosu's capability to host the event.¡±
The BIE General Assembly will vote on the host city for the international event on Nov. 27 in Paris.
At the symposium, participants will discuss ways to tackle global warming and Tuvalu's Deputy Prime Minister Tavau Teii will appeal for international help to keep higher sea levels caused by global warming from submerging his Polynesian country.
The participants will arrive in Korea Wednesday to attend the symposium at a hotel in Seoul from Sept. 13 to 14 and visit Yeosu on Sep. 15.
