  • Booze now, burn later
  • A martini is a glamorous accessory at a party, but drink too many and you might wind up with a un-fabulously flabby midsection. Unfortunately for most New Yorkers (even ab-obsessed ones), a night out just isn’t complete without a cocktail—or four. We asked Charles Stuart Platkin, founder of the Diet Detective (dietdetective.com), to calculate the caloric content of some of our favorite specialty drinks and the number of minutes at various tasks it would take to burn those calories off. Then we enlisted Lashaun Dale, national creative director of group fitness at Equinox, to create some Sunday workouts for counteracting intense Saturday nights.—Emily Weiner

    The drink
The Volcano: Dark rum, amaretto, peach Schnapps, grenadine and OJ served in a tiki mug ($9) or a flaming Volcano bowl ($25, serves four)

    The workout
A simple “surf and turf workout” should help maintain both your figure and your tropical frame of mind, says Dale.  “Alternate two freestyle laps with a set of 15 poolside crunches and squat thrusts for 45 minutes.”

    The drink
New York Sour ($12): Rye whiskey and fresh lemon juice topped with a dash of orange juice and a float of dry red wine

    The workout
Dale pairs this relatively light drink with “the classic New York workout: a 40-minute speed walk through Central Park.” If you’ve had a few glasses, she suggests a more vigorous calorie-burning class, like “One Shot,” offered at Power Pilates on 23rd St (powerpilates.com).

Dale recommends an “East meets West workout”—a 60-minute ashtanga /vinyasa Power Yoga practice—to sweat out last night’s indulgence. For a guided session, try a class at Union Square’s steamy Prana Power Yoga (pranapoweryoga.com).

    The drink
Capeta ($6): Coconut milk, condensed milk, a heavy shot of coconut rum and a “secret” Brazilian herb

    The workout
This drink was so calorie-loaded that Dale recruited Equinox instructor and fitness guru Steve Feinberg to devise a workout for it in two parts. First, spend 35–45 minutes performing vigorous aerobic exercises like suicide runs or shadowboxing, taking short breaks in between. In phase two, “Spend a few minutes performing a freely flowing, movement-rich warmup, incorporating dance or martial arts.” Then begin a five-round training circuit as follows: bench press, front-loaded squat, standing dumbell bent-over row and single-legged dead lift.
